Can My Work Sue Me For Taking All The Vacation Allotted?
Hey Reddit, so my situation’s an odd one, I’ll admit. I’ve worked for a warehouse (location: Maryland) since I was 18. I started before I even graduated high school, and was given an amazing opportunity to go to college almost debt free. Since I was going to go to college, they gave me the option to be put on LOA until the summer, and I’ve been coming back ever since. When I came back the first year, I had asked them to put me back on full time status since i was under part time coming back. The person who worked for HR (no longer here) did it, and it’s been a thing I’ve done when I come back.
Last year, we got a new operations manager, and I was told that they’re technically not supposed to do it anymore. But that since they’d been doing it for years, I was “grandfathered in” with another girl in the same situation. This year I’ve come back again, but am told I can’t be placed on full time status. And with the full time status, I would be getting a substantial amount of vacation time since I’ve been with the company for so long.
My question is, if I push the subject, saying I was told I was grandfathered into it can they sue me for back pay on the vacation I’ve already taken from previous years since I knew they “technically weren’t supposed to” last year?
