Landlord Is Trying To Evict Us For Looking At Other Houses, After We Haven’t Had Water For 5 Weeks

in mid january the boiler at the house my boyfriend rents broke & started leaking co2. we called the fire department, they told us to call an hvac professional, which luckily my dad is so he stopped by to check everything out. he turned off the gas & the boiler, said it needs a new fan which he can install for free if my boyfriends landlord gets the part.

my dad sends the landlord the part, the landlord then orders a different one that was cheaper (not the right part) landlord didnt order a new part until days later and it was once again not the one my dad said the boiler needs. by this point it’s been over a week all of our pipes are frozen from having no heat or hot water. my dad tells us that the whole boiler is shot now because it’s been frozen too long or something.

landlord decides to contact his insurance and very blatantly tells my boyfriend to lie to the insurance company (in text too!!!) luckily my boyfriend isnt an idiot so he didnt do that.

now our landlord is really mad at us and has admitted to wanting to “get us out one way or another.” he threatened to break in multiple times on valentines day because we told him we were unavailable, to the extent where we made a report with the police but all the officer did was tell him that he needs to provide reasonable notice and that he can’t break in.

he’s now threatening to evict us because my MIL told him we were looking for a new place to rent, saying he “accepted our request to terminate the lease” despite it just being a text of her saying that shes been looking. he gave us a super bad “””eviction notice””” today that stated because MIL is looking for other houses that we must be out in 30 days.

i know enough about tenants rights laws to know that this is absolutely not a valid eviction notice. the landlord is like 80 something years old and refuses to research the laws when we’ve told him he’s breaking them. he’s been threatening us with this stuff for over a month now. we are so tired and don’t know where to even start legally with this because all we know is the police said it’s not their jurisdiction. we dont even WANT to stay here, but he’s trying to say a text from a week ago is the start of a 30 days notice that again, doesnt legally exist.

so. tldr: landlord waited to handle vital repairs that caused serious damage to the house, tried to lie to insurance about it and is now harassing and trying to evict us
