Our Parents Want To Put All $1.6 Million Into 5% Treasuries And ‘never Touch The Principal.’ At 3% Inflation, Their $83,000 A Year Will Buy $40,000 Worth By 2051

If a retired couple with $1.6 million wants to move it all into Treasuries paying about 5%, they can plan to live on roughly $83,000 a year in interest while leaving the principal alone for life. Their adult children see a problem with that plan, as the interest check stays the same every year while prices keep rising. At 3% inflation, that $83,000 will only buy about $40,000 worth of goods and services by 2051.
Many retirees share this view and for good reason. A Reddit post described a mother who “wants to lock in the 10-year bond rate with about 40% of her retirement money,” thinking she can live off the interest. The appeal is easy to see: a guaranteed government payment and a balance that never shrinks on a statement.
Getting 5% Today Means Buying 20- and 30-Year Bonds
Earning $83,000 on $1.6 million takes a yield of roughly 5.2%, something that short-term Treasuries don’t pay right now. The 1-month bill pays 4.1%, and even the 10-year stands at 5.0%. Only the 20-year (5.3%) and 30-year (5.3%) clear 5%.
Earlier this month, the 20-year yield was above 5.7%, so rates have already moved. If the couple buys short bills and expects 5% to last, they take on reinvestment risk; if they lock in long bonds, they lock in fixed dollar income for decades.
Inflation Decides How Well This Plan Holds Up
Over 25 years at 3% inflation, the $1.6 million principal keeps its face value but buys only about what $764,000 buys today. Leaving the principal untouched keeps the statement balance the same while its real value falls by about half.
A 3% assumption may also be on the low side. Headline CPI rose 4% over the past year, and core PCE rose 3%. The research CPI for Americans 62 and older, which weights housing and medical care more heavily, rose 4%. At that pace, the $83,000 buys about $34,000 worth by 2051. Social Security received a 3.6% cost-of-living increase for 2026. A nominal Treasury coupon never gets one.
Taxes matter less here than inflation does. State income tax doesn’t apply to Treasury interest, but the federal government taxes it in full. With the money in an IRA, withdrawals count as gross income under 26 U.S.C. § 408(d)(1). Joint filers get a $32,200 standard deduction in 2026, and the 12% bracket runs to $100,800, so the federal bill on this income remains modest.
Two Paths That Keep Buying Power Intact
Path 1: Swap Nominal Treasuries for TIPS
Treasury Inflation-Protected Securities (TIPS) raise their principal as prices rise. The 20-year TIPS pays a real yield of 2.9%, and the 30-year pays 3.05%. Spending only the real yield on $1.6 million gives about $46,560 a year. That amount rises with inflation, and the principal keeps its buying power. That approach is the actual version of “never touch the principal.” Most of the gap between $46,560 and $83,000 is principal quietly lost to inflation.
If the couple accepts spending the principal down by 2051, a 25-year TIPS ladder at about the same real yield supports roughly $91,000 a year in today’s dollars. That is more real income than the nominal plan provides in its first year. Right now, I Bonds pay 4.3%, but annual purchase limits make them a small piece of this portfolio.
Path 2: Use a Balanced Portfolio and a 4% Withdrawal
A 4% starting withdrawal equals $64,000, adjusted for inflation each year. Historical research cited in The Retire Sooner Method confirms this. At that rate, a 60/40 stock-and-bond mix gives very high confidence the money will last 30 years. Very conservative mixes such as 20/80 have lower success rates. This path starts with less income than the Treasury plan, but the money keeps growing and is more likely to leave something for heirs. (The 4% figure itself is older than most people realize, and we made the full case for an income-first replacement in a free guide here.)
For many couples in this position, an all-nominal Treasury portfolio may be the worst of the three choices. It looks safe on paper while the couple’s real income falls each year they live.
What to Do Before Buying a Single Bond
- Restate the plan in today’s dollars. Calculate what $83,000 will buy in years 10, 20, and 25 under 3% and 4% inflation. If the year-20 figure falls below essential expenses, the plan may fall short where it matters most, even though the balance never drops.
- Avoid confusing a steady balance with safety. The most common mistake here is treating a balance that never changes as protection. A blend of TIPS for essential spending and a stock allocation for growth covers the risk this couple is most likely to face. If most of the money sits in traditional IRAs, a fee-only planner can help align withdrawal timing with tax brackets, since every IRA dollar counts as taxable income.
