I Am Not A Landlord And Never Want To Be, But I’m Apparently Getting Fined For Not Renewing A Rental License That I Never Asked For Or Possessed.
Location: Pennsylvania I am a first time homeowner, I purchased my house in June 2024. The previous owner was a landlord and had a license to rent the house out. I purchased it as my primary residence. It’s just me and my husband here and we have zero interest in ever becoming landlords. We never sought a rental license and don’t ever plan to. But we received a letter in January that was telling us that we needed to pay $44 to renew our nonexistent and unwanted license or else be faced with fines and having our imaginary license revoked. So I emailed the person who sent the letter and explained our situation. She emailed back, apologized for the confusion and assured me that she would remove us from whatever list we were on that caused them to think we were landlords. Then in September we received another threatening letter. I emailed again and was AGAIN apologized to and reassured that it was just a mistake on their part and is all fixed now. Then yesterday I received a summons to appear at court to plead guilty or not guilty and either pay the fine or else pay for court costs or something. I don’t feel like I need to be paying anything at all. I never applied for any license. I don’t want one and I’m not a landlord. This is someone else’s mistake and I refuse to accept paying for any charges at all because I haven’t broken any laws. Can I actually be fined for not being a landlord? I don’t know how to approach this at all. Please advise?
