Inquiry About Recording People In California

Card image cap

Location: California

A friend of mine who is disabled and lives with her verbally abusive narcissistic parents in California has the following inquiry:

At what point does recording her parents without their consent become legal and admissible in court as evidence of domestic abuse or discrimination?

The verbal abuse has escalated and she's worried she might get assaulted.

She is legally their tenant and pays rent.

She is also worried that they will create a conflict and escalate it, then kick her out and claim that she was the one acting crazy.

She says she is concerned that it is her word against two people who will likely weaponize her mental illness diagnosis to invalidate her claims, because this has happened before.

Her Dad screams at her and threatens her, then her Mom describes her as the aggressive one.

Even a lack of reaction is interpreted and described as overt hostility and anger by her parents while her Dad can scream loud enpough for the whole house to hear and be referred to as “agreeable”.

Thank you in advance.
