The 49ers’ 37-24 win over the Tennessee Titans on Sunday included one of the afternoon’s most unexpected moments: Tennessee’s 305-pound defensive tackle Jeffery Simmons lining up on offense, running a goal-line route, and slipping wide open across the middle for a fourth-quarter touchdown.

When 49ers left tackle Trent Williams was asked about the surprise play after the game, he didn’t hide his reaction.

“No, that was a cool little wrinkle,” Williams said. “Yeah, I definitely didn’t see that coming.”

Simmons’ touchdown quickly shifted the conversation toward Williams himself — specifically, whether he would ever want a chance at scoring one of his own. Williams has been in the NFL since 2010 and has yet to score.

The All-Pro said the idea has been in his mind for years, but not with the same urgency anymore.

“At the end of the day, I’ve had a long time to sit there and fantasize over a touchdown and stuff,” Williams said. “But I think those fantasies kind of faded a little bit. I just want to lock down my position.”

Now 10-4, the 49ers will look to strengthen their playoff position as they prepare for a Monday night matchup against the Indianapolis Colts.
