My Mail Was Being Stolen By My Roommates So I Went To The Post Office To Get My Mail Held But The Usps Held Everyone’s Mail And Now The Landlord Thinks He’s Pressing Charges Over This…
Location: Texas
Hi,
Long story short, I moved into a boarding house with a bunch of criminals (they’re actually felons and are committing identity theft crimes). Because of this, I went to the local post office and asked them to hold my mail. The clerk explained to me that they would hold just my mail but now I realize they held the whole house’s mail. Note that I have never been to the post office to pick up even my mail yet and would never steal the mail from any of my criminal roommates.
Well, unfortunately the clerk didn’t explain to me that everyone’s mail would be held (I realize now that it says it on the name box but I didn’t read it as closely as I should because I was in a panic while doing it because I had discovered their identity theft scheme); well, fast forward to today, and the felon landlord that lives there is pissed and is threatening to press charges against me. Again, I’ve never stolen anyone’s mail - I’ve not even been there to pick up MY OWN MAIL yet from the hold and will now cancel the hold on Monday when they’re open.
Here’s my question: can I really get prosecuted for this!? I did it under the understanding that my mail only - as I put my name only on the name box - would be held, not the rest of the house’s mail, and these criminal felon fuckasses are threatening to press “federal charges” and my goodness I don’t need that. I didn’t do it for any nefarious reason, I did it so that they couldn’t continue to steal MY MAIL.
How boned am I?
Thank you.
Edit: my felon identity stealing thieving ass roommates are calling the police… so… and yes, I’m moving out in a few days. I no longer even sleep there anymore and am moving out (turning over the keys and getting the rest of my things) next week when I get back from my trip. One of the roommates punctured my tires the other day and that was the end of that all for me. They are trying to tell the police that I had the mail held to “steal the mail” / “try to steal the title to the house” which is ironic because they tried to steal the title to my car (they took pics of my VIN and registration sticker to ostensibly run a title scam). I’ve not even been to the USPS to even pick up MY MAIL YET, nonetheless any of their mail. I’m concerned that they’re going to lie their asses off to the police / state their concerns and the idiot police in my jurisdiction are going to arrest me for something I had no intention on doing - I was literally doing it to ensure my mail would no longer be compromised because one of the roommates stole my car insurance mail (because of this, I got new insurance and am having the statements mailed to the insurance office until I have my new apartment address away from these felon fucks next week). I know they’re going to call the police on me for this because I’ve had to call the police on them four fucking times already for their shit and I don’t need charges.
Edit 2: I absolutely am doing this. I am out of town til late next week but am calling the post office on Monday to let them know of the holding error, and will get a PO Box once I return, even though I am moving a week later.
I am doing this as a buffer so that when I change my address from the current address to the next one, it will go to the PO Box instead of my new address because I don’t want these people knowing my new address clearly. I don’t believe that change of address forms put your new address on them anymore when they go to your old address, but I don’t want to have that mistake, possibly occur and then have issues at my new address, so as a buffer, I am getting a post office box next week when I return, having my mail forwarded there, and then I will change the address from the PO Box to my new address once I leave.
