My Mom Wants Me To Lie About Having Been A Witness Of A Notarized Document

Card image cap

Location: Louisiana

My mom and grandmother co-signed on their home together through a USDA home loan. In 2011 they had paperwork notarized, removing my mother from the deed by having her donate her portion of the house to my grandmother. I was the witness for that notarization.

My grandmother died a decade ago, without writing a will. My mom moved back into the house and started making the monthly payments for it at that point.

She texted today, letting me know that the home insurance agency told her that they cannot insure the home for her since she is not on the deed. Her solution to this was to suggest that we should tell them that my grandmother forged both of our signatures and had it illegally notarized. With her justification being that the notary is dead. I am obviously not going to do this (that would be fraud, right?) and suggested that she reach out to the USDA about this and proceed from there.

I am wondering if there are any steps I should take to safeguard myself legally in the event that she attempts to fraudulently use my identity?

*I want to add that I do not live in the same state as my mother, if that makes a difference
