Storage Unit Was "accidentally Auctioned Off" In August 2022. Contacted Upper Management With No Response, And Only Received A Refund For The Few Months I Paid. Is There Anything I Can Do Now?

Long story short-ish, I was behind on my bill and hit with a "pay before we sell" notice. I paid day before the cutoff date, and was assured it was removed from the list of to be sold units. I even had the new girl leave a message and sticky note for the site manager who was temporarily out of town. 2 days later, I get a phone call from him saying that there was "an accident" and my unit had been sold off and entirely cleaned out already. They said they contacted the buyer, but couldn't get ahold of him. They told me it was illegal to give me his information, which I understand, but none of my legal documents (birth certificate, mail, bank papers, etc) were returned to the location. A few days later, the site manager told me he had contacted 2 people higher up and gave me a direct phone number and email address to one of them. I was left a single voicemail that day by the COO or director for my state (can't remember which) where he asked me to call him back so they could "do whatever they can to make up for it" so I'd called back within 2 hours and it went straight to his voicemail. After multiple emails and many phone calls and voicemails, I never got anything back. No attempted phone calls, no emails, no information passed to the site manager, no mail, no carrier pigeon-- nothing.

I briefly looked into legal action, but wasn't coming up with much. I was told by a family friend who is close with a lawyer that they would have him call me about it, and that never happened. I pretty much gave up entirely after a few months. I was telling this story to some friends earlier today, and one of them mentioned that I could probably still take legal action. I don't have much hope for it, and I'm not holding my breath at all. Any advice, or should I just let it go?

EDIT: After looking back on receipts, the due date was end of day 28th, and I'd paid on the 26th at 11am.
