Moved Across The Country For A Job, Insisted It Would Be For 1+year And Fired After One Month.

Hello! So my fiancee (who is an interior designer) and I lived in Virginia and she applied to a job in Juneau. Tons of zoom meetings, each lasting over an hour, design exercises that they were happy with, and they end up ghosting her. Get back to her after awhile saying things got crazy but they’d love to offer her the job.

During the zoom meetings they had tons of conversations about expectations on both sides, she expressed concern about making a big move and what would happen if things didn’t work out, and they were happy she brought it up! That they would be willing to work with her for months to get her up to speed even if she wasn’t quite where they wanted (not that she wasn’t) and that if she quit before a year they would make her reimburse the moving assistance (which was a pathetic amount tbh) they were giving us.

We got here, and she just got fired after barely a month workin here. Tons and tons of red flags, they have a showroom where the manager “spontaneously” left without notice, and so her direct boss (whom she would be learning from) took over managing this showroom and spent almost no time at all with her, most communication was just completely ignored. Calls texts emails to said boss about work just completely ignored or gotten to days later. No feedback during this month, and she puts in work, spends time outside of work researching their design work. Putting in OT every week despite being salaried. And nothing from them, they just came in, said she wasn’t a good fit and she was fired.

I am feeling completely doomed because I don’t think we have anything on paper about them guaranteeing any length of employment, all of that had just been discussed over zoom. And despite overwhelming evidence of their incompetence I don’t think any of that gives us legal grounds. Surely they are just bleeding money and decided to cut costs the easiest ways they could.

I’m just reaching out in hopes that something exists to help hold them accountable. They completely uprooted our lives, cost us thousands of dollars (not including how much money we’re going to lose with her being out of work now) and did serious mental damage to my fiancee. We’re looking into unemployment because at least that is SOMETHING to hold them accountable but it just feels like one of the most obscene crimes you can commit on someone and just go about your life like nothing happened.
