  • Driver warned others before crashing into the police station.
  • BMW X5 breached lobby and reached the dispatch section.
  • Police detected alcohol odor after pulling the driver out.

An otherwise unremarkable afternoon in Shrewsbury, Massachusetts, was suddenly upended when a black BMW X5 plowed into the town’s police station, an act the driver later framed in chilling terms.

The 58 year old man behind the wheel reportedly said he wanted “suicide by cop” and told people the crash was “going to be spectacular.” Even so, moments later he asked for help and apologized to first responders, a jarring contrast that set the tone for what followed.

The X5 SUV smashed through the front doors of the Shrewsbury Police Department building on Monday afternoon with enough force to carry through the lobby and into the dispatch section. Three workers were inside the dispatch area at the time, yet remarkably, none were injured.

What He Told Police Next

Court documents say that after the driver, Robert McCluskey, was pulled from the X5, he was asked whether the crash was intentional. He reportedly answered, “Yes, I am sorry, I am sorry,” and asked responders to “help me.” An officer also noted that McCluskey smelled of alcohol.

According to CBS News, McCluskey had told several people about his plans before the crash, saying, “I want suicide by cop,” and to “watch the news, it’s going to be spectacular. I am going to end this.” Shortly after the crash, a call was made to 911, warning that McCluskey was on the way to the police station.

The 58 year old man was taken to the hospital immediately after the incident and then arrested. He was charged with reckless operation of a motor vehicle, malicious destruction of property over $1,200, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, and three counts of assault with a dangerous weapon.

A Long List Of Counts

Shrewsbury Police Chief Kevin Anderson said McCluskey has a prior driving under the influence charge on his record and is subject to a restraining order filed by the mother of his children. Anderson also noted that a training session had taken place in front of the police complex roughly 30 minutes before the crash.
