Junkyard Find: 2004 Chevrolet Corsa Comfort Sedan

The Opel Corsa has been a huge seller around the world for better than 40 years and is still being made, but no version has ever been offered in the United States. That doesn't mean you can't find Corsas in American junkyards, though.

This Brazilian-built Corsa currently resides in a car graveyard just south of Denver. As so often happens, I learned about it from Mason of Unloved Cars of Colorado.

It was driven here from the state of Chihuahua, which is the closest Mexican state to Colorado. It's about 650 miles from Ciudad Juárez to Denver, which is about as long a trip as Kansas City or the Bonneville Salt Flats to the Mile High City.

It is legal to bring a car from Mexico or Canada into the United States and drive it here for a year on its foreign registration, but once the year is up it must be taken back across the border or registered in a U.S. state. The latter solution is just about impossible for Mexican-market cars (unless they are more than 25 years old).

Vehicles with Mexican plates are fairly commonplace in Front Range Colorado, and some of those machines never make it back home. Impossible to register here, they end up in the boneyards.

In recent years, I've documented quite a few such vehicles, including a 2001 Dodge Ramcharger, a 2002 Chevrolet Chevy, a 2006 Peugeot 407, a 2008 Nissan Aprio, a 2009 Chevrolet Chevy, a 2014 Suzuki SX4 S-Cross, a 2015 Nissan Tsuru, a 2017 Renault Duster, a 2018 Chevrolet Beat, and a 2019 Chevrolet Beat.

Five of those cars were products of the mighty GM Empire. The two Beats were India-built Daewoo Matizes, while the Chevrolet Chevys were Opel Corsa Bs. Today's car is also a Corsa, but it's a more modern Corsa C (because sales of the B and C overlapped for years in the Latin American region).

The Chevrolet Corsa was sold in Mexico for the 2002 through 2008 model years (sales of the Brazilian-built sedan began in 2003), after which it was replaced by the Aveo.

This one has the midgrade Comfort trim level, which appears to have been quite popular.

It appears to have been sold new by Grupo Rivero in Monterrey, which is a Chevrolet-Nissan dealership today.

It must have been confusing for Mexican car shoppers to have two generations of Opel Corsa for sale side-by-side in the same Chevrolet showrooms.

For 2004, GM de México offered a bunch of Chevrolet models that were essentially identical to those sold in the United States (Corvette, Impala, Malibu, Cavalier, Trailblazer, Tracker, Suburban, Venture, Express) plus the Sonora (aka GMC Yukon in El Norte).

But the rest of the Mexican Chevrolet lineup was Opel-derived that year: Chevy, Corsa, Astra, Vectra, Zafira, Meriva. GM sold Daewoos in Mexico via the Pontiac brand during that era.

If you look at all the variations sold around the world, the Corsa C was built with gasoline engines ranging from a 57-horse 973cc three-banger all the way up to mighty 1.8-liter overhead-cam four-cylinders with horsepower ratings in the 110s and 120s. Diesels were 1.3- and 1.7-liter I4s.

This car appears to have Opel's N18FXH, a SOHC gasoline engine rated at 115 hp.

And you won't be able to outrun him in this car!

For 2004, the only transmission available in the Mexican-market Corsa was a five-speed manual. It appears that the Easytronic automated manual became available as an option in the later Mexican Corsa.

Would any parts from this car interchange with U.S.-market machinery of the middle 2000s? It would be a long shot, though a serious search of part-number cross-references might show up some bits and pieces in, say, the Saturn L-Series or Suzuki Verona.

I'd bet on audio and HVAC components for that, with maybe some solenoids and sensors under the hood, since the Corsa C didn't share a platform with any vehicles sold here.

Realistically, once the wheels and tires were gone and the emblems were pried off for display on someone's garage wall, we can expect this car to go to The Crusher intact. There might be a couple of Mexican roofers driving Chevy Corsas to their jobsites around Denver now, but they wouldn't think there would be any point to checking local junkyards for parts.
