Kia Ev2 Sets New Standard For Quiet Cabins In The Compact Ev Segment

Kia is putting cabin refinement at the center of its newest electric model. The upcoming Kia EV2 has been developed with a strong focus on Noise, Vibration, and Harshness (NVH) performance, aiming to deliver a calm and controlled driving experience for European customers.

Designed, engineered, produced, and sold in Europe, the EV2 brings advanced acoustic engineering to the compact EV segment—an area where cabin refinement is becoming increasingly important as electric vehicles eliminate traditional engine noise.

Why Quietness Matters More in EVs

In conventional petrol and diesel cars, the combustion engine naturally masks many background noises. In electric vehicles, however, that masking effect disappears. This means road noise, wind turbulence, and high-frequency sounds from components become far more noticeable.

According to Pablo Martínez Masip, EV buyers tend to notice small vibrations and tonal noises immediately.

“EVs change what customers notice first,” he explained. “Without a petrol or diesel engine covering background noise, small high-frequency sounds stand out right away. The EV2 stays calm at high speed, controlled on rough roads, and consistent every day, creating a refined feel from the first kilometre.”

Advanced Simulations and Precision Testing

To tackle these challenges early in development, engineers at the Hyundai Motor Europe Technical Centre used advanced computer simulations to predict potential noise issues before physical prototypes were built.

These simulations helped identify areas where road or wind noise could affect cabin comfort, allowing engineers to implement solutions early in the design process.

Dyno-based NVH testing also played a key role. Testing vehicles in a controlled environment allowed engineers to isolate specific frequencies and evaluate countermeasures without external variables like weather or road surface conditions.

Lead engineer Oliver Jung noted that the EV2’s NVH development was treated as a complete system.

“Early simulations helped us locate potential noise sources, while dyno testing provided repeatable data to validate every solution,” he said.

Engineering a Quieter Cabin

Several technical measures help the EV2 maintain a quiet cabin:

– Acoustic tyres designed to reduce tonal road noise
– Special carpets and wheel arch absorbers that lower perceived sound levels
– Acoustic door glass and windscreen that reduce wind turbulence noise at motorway speeds

Together, these features help create a stable and quiet environment inside the cabin—even during high-speed driving.

Managing High-Frequency EV Sounds

Although electric motors are quieter than combustion engines, some EV-specific components can produce high-frequency tonal noise. These include the inverter and DC/DC converter.

To minimize these sounds, the EV2 features a dedicated sound package that includes dash inner insulation, a frunk absorber and an optimized underbody cover.

These components work together to limit high-frequency noise transmission and maintain a balanced acoustic profile inside the cabin.

Safety Sounds That Stay Subtle

Sound design in the EV2 also supports safety without compromising comfort.

The vehicle’s pedestrian warning sound alerts nearby road users when driving at low speeds, while the alert tone for Intelligent Speed Limit Assist has been carefully tuned to provide clear guidance without becoming intrusive for occupants.

A Compact EV Designed for European Drivers

Beyond its quiet cabin, the Kia EV2 is designed to make electric mobility more accessible in the B-SUV segment.

The model will offer two battery options:

– 42.2 kWh battery – estimated range up to 317 km (WLTP)
– 61.0 kWh battery – estimated range up to 453 km (WLTP)

Charging options include 400V DC fast charging, 11 kW and 22 kW AC charging, as well as advanced EV features like EV route planning, Plug & Charge capability and bidirectional charging support.

Practical Interior and Modern Technology

The EV2 is built with European households in mind. The compact SUV offers generous legroom, flexible rear seating, and up to 362 litres of cargo space.

Inside, drivers will find a triple-screen display layout, over-the-air software updates, and advanced driver assistance systems.

By combining practical design with advanced NVH engineering, Kia aims to set a new benchmark for refinement in the compact electric vehicle category.
