Man Lion’s Coach E Completes Extreme Winter Testing In Arctic Conditions

The fully electric MAN Lion’s Coach E has successfully completed its first winter testing program, demonstrating impressive performance in some of the harshest climates on Earth. Engineers from MAN Truck & Bus pushed the electric coach to its limits in freezing temperatures, icy roads, and mountainous terrain to ensure reliability before it enters series production.

The milestone test highlights the manufacturer’s commitment to building electric passenger transport solutions capable of operating year-round—even in extreme conditions.

Thousands of Kilometers in Ice and Snow

The winter trials took place in northern Sweden near the Arctic Circle and in Erzurum, known for its severe winter weather. Four Lion’s Coach E vehicles covered thousands of kilometers across snow-covered and icy roads in temperatures reaching –30°C.

Engineers closely monitored several key systems, including:

– High-voltage battery performance in extreme cold
– Energy management, including preconditioning and charging
– Electric powertrain operation
– Interior thermal management and passenger heating

Cold climates can significantly affect electric vehicle performance, particularly battery efficiency and heating requirements. However, according to the company, the electric coach met all expectations during the demanding tests.

Barbaros Oktay, Head of Bus at MAN Truck & Bus, emphasized the importance of rigorous validation following the vehicle’s debut at Busworld Europe last year.

Data-Driven Testing Under Real-World Conditions

The winter program evaluated not only individual components but also the interaction of the entire vehicle system. Hundreds of onboard sensors continuously collected data on temperature levels, pressure readings, energy flow, and overall system performance during the tests.

These insights allow engineers to fine-tune the vehicle and validate improvements under real-world conditions. The successful trials represent a major step toward series production and confirm the coach’s ability to operate reliably across diverse climates—from southern Europe to the far north.

The winter program included nine vehicles in total, ranging from conventional diesel coaches to electric and hybrid city and intercity buses. MAN has been conducting such extreme winter tests in northern Sweden for more than three decades.

MAN’s First Fully Electric Coach

The MAN Lion’s Coach 14 E marks the company’s first fully electric touring coach and reflects MAN’s broader transition toward zero-emission mobility.

Key specifications include:

– Battery capacity: 320–480 kWh usable energy
– Range: Up to 650 km under optimal conditions
– Passenger capacity: Up to 63 passengers
– Battery type: NMC battery packs produced at MAN’s Nuremberg facility

The electric coach uses proven drivetrain technology derived from MAN’s eTruck platform while featuring an aerodynamically optimized design that reduces drag and improves efficiency.

Importantly, the vehicle maintains the same luggage capacity as the diesel version, ensuring that tour operators do not have to compromise on practicality.

Production Preparations Underway

Following its world premiere in 2025, MAN is currently conducting extensive testing and validation programs while preparing production at its bus facility in Ankara.

The company plans to deliver the first units to selected customers before the end of the year, marking a significant step forward for electric long-distance passenger transport.

With successful winter trials now complete, the Lion’s Coach E demonstrates that fully electric coaches can deliver reliable performance—even in some of the most demanding winter environments.
