Pick Of The Day: 1979 Ford F-250 Custom 4×4

Built Ford Tough. The long-running tagline was launched by advertising agency J. Walter Thompson in 1979, and it endured for years in commercials for Ford trucks. One of the rugged pickups rolling off the assembly line that year was our Pick of the Day, a 1979 Ford F-250 Custom 4×4 pickup listed for sale on ClassicCars.com by a private seller in Bunker Hill, Illinois.

“Very original, very solid, quality truck,” the listing says. “Current odometer is 61,449. Believed to be original miles due to research and condition of truck.” The license plate says it all!

Back in July, I shared the story of my dad’s former 1979 F-Series truck, so it’s no wonder I’ve had classic Ford trucks on the brain. This one looks particularly well-kept.

The exterior is finished in a two-tone dark brown over white and features chrome bumpers, body side moldings, swing-away mirrors, long bed, receiver hitch, and 17-inch polished aluminum wheels wrapped in Americus Rugged M/T tires. The floor of the cargo bed is free of major damage, a strong indication the truck hasn’t been subjected to much heavy-duty use.

The interior of the cab is upholstered in tan cloth, and features include rubber flooring, manual-crank windows, power steering, power brakes, push-button radio, woodgrain trim, and heater. The data tag in the driver door jamb says that truck was assembled in March 1979.

Under the hood is a 400ci V-8 mated to a column-shifted C6 three-speed automatic transmission and a dual-range transfer case. The seller says that within the last three years, the battery, belts, hoses, fluids, master cylinder, and brake booster have been replaced. The tires and wheels are also newer.

Even 47 years after its debut, the Built Ford Tough slogan holds true for the many F-Series pickups from that era that are still on the road putting in work. Thanks to features such as double-wall cargo area construction, twin-I-beam suspension, eight-inch-deep frame siderails, and extensive rust prevention measures, Ford trucks like this one have survived the test of time.
