Pick Of The Day: 1983 Jeep Cj-7

To say that the Jeep community is strong would be a massive understatement. Jeep people, or as a friend calls them, “Jeeple,” get together every year for massive overlanding-style excursions in and around the Moab, Utah area. There is an event coming up called the Labor Day Safari, September 5-7, which will attract 150 vehicles. Our Pick of the Day, a 1983 Jeep CJ-7, would look right at home on the dusty trails. The 4×4 is listed for sale on ClassicCars.com by a private seller in Carlsbad, California.

“If you’re looking for an iconic CJ-7 that combines classic Jeep character with tasteful upgrades and years of restoration work, this is it,” the listing says.

The CJ-7, produced from 1976-86, was known for being a rugged off-roader. It came standard with Quadra-Trac four-wheel drive, removable doors, body-on-frame design, and solid axles. All of that, plus the mechanical simplicity of a torquey inline-six engine and optimal approach/departure angles gave it serious off-road credentials. That was one of the reasons Jeep said in magazine advertisements, “We wrote the book on four-wheel drive.”

Exterior features include a bumper-mounted winch, fold-flat windshield, dual side mirrors, removable doors, tubular roll bar, and fender flares. A 2.5-inch suspension lift and 33-inch BFGoodrich All-Terrain T/A tires make the already-capable CJ nearly unstoppable in the rough stuff.

Simplicity (and all-weather versatility) was the name of the game when designing the CJ’s cabin, so you won’t find many temperamental luxury frills. And that’s just the way Jeep people like it. Interior features include black vinyl bucket seats, center console with cup holders, custom sound system, and embroidered floor mats.

Under the hood is a rebuilt 258ci inline-six mated to a five-speed manual transmission and a dual-range transfer case. An aluminum radiator and Flowmaster exhaust system have been added for mechanical (and audible) appeal. The odometer shows 1,536 miles, although the true mileage is unknown.

The listing concludes, “Whether you’re searching for a weekend cruiser, a beach Jeep, a trail-ready classic, or a collectible CJ-7, this Jeep is ready for its next owner.”
