  • Acura is auctioning its custom NSX Roadster from The Avengers.
  • The car will be displayed at Sundance’s Grand Hyatt Deer Valley.
  • It’s built on a 1991 NSX chassis with 252K miles underneath.

A few years before the second-generation NSX ever turned a wheel, moviegoers got a sneak peek of something special. In The Avengers, Robert Downey Jr. rolled up in a dark red Acura NSX Roadster concept, and for gearheads paying attention, it was a memorable cameo.

Now, that exact car is going up for sale, giving one lucky buyer the chance to own a genuine piece of superhero cinema.

Acura has confirmed it will showcase the one-off roadster at this week’s Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah. The car will appear during the annual fundraiser hosted at the Grand Hyatt Deer Valley.

The sale will be hosted by Cars & Bids, which was tapped as the official auction platform for this year’s offering. Acura says that the proceeds will go to a charity chosen by the winning bidder.

On top of that, the company plans to make an additional contribution to the Sundance Institute, continuing its support for independent filmmakers and fresh creative voices.

“Acura has been honored to stand alongside the Sundance Film Festival in championing bold storytelling and the independent artists who bring it to life,” assistant vice president of marketing at American Honda, Jennifer Symington said. “As we celebrate the legacy of Robert Redford, we’re proud to spotlight our commitment to the Sundance Institute through the auction of this iconic Acura NSX Roadster, ensuring continued support for emerging voices year-round.”

While the NSX Roadster’s exterior might suggest a close link to the second-generation model, it’s actually built on the chassis of a first-generation 1991 NSX that had already logged a hefty 252,000 miles (405,555 km).

It was reworked with a handcrafted body made of resin and fiberglass, reshaped to match the concept seen on screen. The ride height was lowered by 2 inches, and 18-inch wheels were added to complete the transformation. Inside, aside from a pair of aftermarket seats, the cabin remains largely faithful to the original NSX layout.

The NSX Roadster isn’t the only Acura that’ll be at Sundance. The MDX has been named as the official vehicle of the festival and will be used across the various events and premieres. The small Acura ADX will also be displayed.
