A new battery test from Donut Lab, conducted in partnership with Verge Motorcycles, is offering a closer look at what could become one of the most disruptive developments in electric mobility: ultra-fast charging at the battery pack level.

Unlike earlier demonstrations that focused on individual cells in controlled lab environments, this latest test brings the technology into a real-world vehicle setup—specifically, the Verge TS Pro electric motorcycle.

From Lab Claims to Real-World Testing

Donut Lab first made headlines with bold claims about its next-generation battery technology, including energy densities as high as 400 Wh/kg, extremely long lifespans, and the absence of rare-earth materials. However, those claims were met with skepticism due to limited publicly available validation.

Since then, the company has gradually released test data. Until now, most results were confined to single-cell testing. This new collaboration marks the first time Donut Lab has demonstrated how its battery performs as a complete pack inside a working vehicle.

That shift—from theory to application—is critical.

Fast Charging That Redefines Motorcycles

At the center of the test is an 18 kWh battery pack integrated into a Verge motorcycle platform. The results are impressive, particularly given the packaging constraints typical of two-wheelers.

Under real-world conditions using a public fast charger:

– Charging power exceeded 100 kW, sustained for around five minutes
– Battery charged from 10% to 50% in just 5 minutes
– 10% to 70% took just over 9 minutes
– 10% to 80% was achieved in approximately 12 minutes

For context, these figures place the system among the fastest-charging electric motorcycles ever tested—approaching charging performance typically seen in electric cars.

Even more notable is that the system achieves this without liquid cooling. Instead, it relies on air cooling, using fans and heat sinks to regulate temperature—simplifying design while reducing weight and complexity.

Why This Matters

Fast charging in motorcycles is significantly more challenging than in cars. Smaller battery packs usually limit charging speeds due to fewer cells sharing the load and tighter thermal constraints.

Yet Donut Lab’s system appears to overcome these limitations. Maintaining over 100 kW of charging power in such a compact setup suggests a highly optimized battery architecture.

Still, questions remain. The company previously hinted at peak charging rates of up to 200 kW, meaning the current test achieves roughly half that figure. It’s unclear whether this is due to charger limitations, system design, or ongoing optimization.

Flexible Battery Design as a Key Advantage

According to Donut Lab, one of the standout benefits of its technology is flexibility. The high energy density allows manufacturers to create battery packs with varying capacities while maintaining the same physical footprint.

For motorcycle applications—where space is extremely limited—this could be a game changer. It enables longer range or higher performance without requiring major design compromises.

Verge Motorcycles also confirmed that extended-range versions of the battery pack are already in development, offering significantly higher energy capacity.

A Promising Step, But Not the Final Word

While this test marks an important milestone, it doesn’t fully validate all of Donut Lab’s earlier claims—particularly around solid-state chemistry and record-breaking energy density.

However, it does confirm something arguably more important: the company’s technology can deliver meaningful performance improvements in a real vehicle, not just in the lab.

And if further testing continues to support these results, ultra-fast charging electric motorcycles could soon move from niche innovation to mainstream reality.

Bottom line: Donut Lab’s latest test with Verge Motorcycles doesn’t settle every debate—but it does move the conversation forward, showing that next-generation battery performance may be closer than many expected.
