$71.5k Wire Fraud Caught Day 1, But Chase Delayed 5 Month & Lost Funds. Need Help!
I am in a desperate situation and looking for advice on how to force two major banks to take responsibility for a severe operational failure that cost me $71,541.70 in home closing funds.
On May 4, 2026, I was scheduled to close on my first home. I received spoofed wire instructions that appeared to come directly from my title company. Believing they were legitimate, I went in person to my local Chase branch and wired $71,541.70 from my Chase Business Account to a beneficiary account at Wells Fargo.
May 4, 2026 (Day 1): Shortly after the transfer, the real title company alerted me to the scam. On that exact same day, Wells Fargo's internal fraud team caught the amount mismatch on the wire, called the title company directly, confirmed the fraud, and flagged the incoming transfer.
May 4, 2026 (Day 1): Within less than an hour of learning about the scam, I returned to my local Chase branch in person, provided all fraud documentation, and formally requested an emergency wire recall.
May – September 2026: Wells Fargo requested a standard Hold Harmless / Indemnification Letter from Chase to execute the return of the flagged funds back to my account. For nearly 5 months, despite my daily and weekly follow-ups, Chase repeatedly refused to send this routine administrative letter. Front-line support dismissed my case, told me "there's nothing they can do," and tried to claim it wasn't a scam because I initiated the wire in person.
Late September 2026: After nearly 5 months of constant delays by Chase, I received a letter from Chase stating they can no longer recall the wire because "no money remains in the target Wells Fargo account."
Both institutions were formally notified on Day 1 that the transaction was fraudulent. Wells Fargo had the deposit flagged on the day it hit, but Chase’s refusal to send basic inter-bank indemnification paperwork for over 100 days allowed the hold to stall until the funds somehow vanished.
I worked every single day for almost 10 years to save this money for my first mortgage, and watching it vanish due to inter-bank administrative neglect is destroying my mental health.
I am currently submitting complaints to the CFPB, OCC, and FBI IC3. Has anyone successfully dealt with a situation where a sending bank refused to send a Hold Harmless letter to return flagged funds? Is there an executive escalation team or legal avenue I should pursue immediately?
