Buffalo Bills chief operating officer sees nothing wrong with playing the Canadian national anthem.

The Buffalo Bills registered a resounding 41-31 win over the Detroit Lions during their first-ever regular season game at the new Highmark Stadium.

While Bills fans enjoyed the team’s successful start in the new stadium, some were left puzzled by the team’s decision to play the Canadian national anthem before the game.

Buffalo Bills COO Pete Guelli says playing O Canada was a part of ‘broader marketing effort’

The Bills are currently facing backlash for having the Barenaked Ladies sing O Canada during the team’s home opener.

However, COO Pete Guelli sees nothing wrong with the decision as he defended it in a conversation with The Athletic.

“For us, it’s all about the business. This is part of a broader marketing effort into Southern Ontario and Toronto. It’s been a critical part of our business model, and it’s going to continue to be.

“This has been in the works prior to anything that’s come up on the [geopolitical] front,” Guelli said.

He added, “Buffalo’s a small market, but when you combine it with the Greater Toronto Area, it’s a top-five NFL market.”

Considering the location of the Bills, it’s no surprise that they have a very devoted Canadian fan following.

Despite that, some fans may still refuse to allow the Canadian national anthem on American soil. But as things stand, the Bills have no plans to offer an apology or stop their marketing effort.
