“extracting Is No Longer Enough” — Burkina Faso’s Traore Opens First Gold Refinery
Burkina Faso President Ibrahim Traore has inaugurated the country’s first gold refinery in Ouagadougou, as the West African nation pushes to process more of its mineral wealth domestically rather than exporting raw resources.
The RAFFINOR-BF refinery can process up to 400 kilograms of gold per day. Traore said Burkina Faso wants to build the entire minerals value chain inside the country, starting with gold and eventually extending the effort to manganese, copper, zinc and other metals.
Mining Minister Yacouba Zabre Gouba said Burkina Faso produced more than 94 tonnes of gold in 2025, despite security challenges, but argued that producing and exporting raw resources is no longer enough.
The refinery is part of the government’s broader drive to increase state control over mining and retain more value from the country’s mineral resources at home.
Watch the full report for footage from the refinery inauguration and Traore’s push for local mineral processing.
