AI Is Making Samsung Rich, But at What Cost?

Samsung is making an enormous amount of money from the AI boom, but its latest earnings reveal a much more complicated picture beneath the record breaking numbers.

While demand for AI chips continues to push its semiconductor business to new heights, rising memory prices are creating serious problems for other parts of the company.. In fact, Samsung is becoming increasingly dependent on a single business to drive its overall profitability

Samsung's Q3 revenue surged 127% year over year to a record ₩195.3 trillion (approximately $146 billion). Operating profit performed even better, climbing nearly ninefold to ₩107.4 trillion (around $80 billion), setting another record. Its operating margin also reached an extraordinary 55%, compared with 52% in Q2.. Despite these impressive results, Samsung shares fell more than 4% as earnings failed to meet elevated market expectations. Investors are also questioning whether the company will translate its massive AI-driven profits into meaningful returns for shareholders

The biggest story, however, is the growing divide between Samsung's business divisions:

-Semiconductors are carrying the entire company: Chip revenue increased 15% quarter over quarter to ₩147.1 trillion, while operating profit reached ₩106.5 trillion. This means Samsung's semiconductor division now generates approximately 99% of the company's total operating profit. The AI infrastructure boom, growing demand for high-performance memory, and limited global supply are creating extremely favorable conditions for its chip business

- HBM4 is becoming a major growth driver: Samsung's HBM4 sales more than tripled compared with the previous quarter as the company gains ground in the next generation of high-bandwidth memory used in AI accelerators. Management also revealed that its entire 2027 production capacity is already booked, with supply shortages expected to continue through 2028. This suggests that demand for advanced memory could remain strong for years rather than being just a short term AI driven trend

- Consumer electronics are struggling: While the semiconductor division is enjoying record profits, Samsung's consumer electronics business recorded an operating loss of ₩0.8 trillion. Rising memory prices are increasing production costs and putting pressure on margins across smartphones, televisions, and home appliances.. In other words, the same shortage that is making Samsung's chip business incredibly profitable is making its other divisions more expensive to operate.

This creates an interesting situation for Samsung..The company is benefiting enormously from the AI boom, but those benefits are not being distributed equally across its businesses. Its semiconductor division is generating almost all the operating profit, while the rest of the company is dealing with higher costs and shrinking margins

The bigger question now is how sustainable this level of profitability will be. If AI infrastructure spending continues and memory supply remains tight, Samsung could have another strong period ahead. However, investors will also be watching whether the company can turn its semiconductor success into broader growth without allowing its other businesses to become a long-term drag on performance.

Record earnings are impressive, but Samsung's growing dependence on the AI memory market is becoming impossible to ignore.
