Alleged ‘maga Network’ Cbs News Blames President For Louise Lucas Probe

CBS News and Tony Dokoupil

CBS News has been under fire for just over a year, with its leadership shifting under the corporate merger news. When Bari Weiss was installed as the new head of the news division, many voices in the media industry have been griping about the network becoming a voice for President Donald Trump’s administration.

This mewling has largely been a case of wishcasting. CBS News has not exactly become a propaganda mouthpiece for the president, and on last night’s evening broadcast, we saw more proof.

On the CBS Evening News, embattled host Tony Dokoupil introduced a segment on the investigation into Virginia state politician Louise Lucas.

This case involves a Democrat, so it carries a lot of the expected reactions from the press; mostly, that means there are few reactions. The coverage on this expanded investigation has been scant on the cable news nets, and the ABC News and NBC News divisions have shown little to zero interest.

Of those daring to delve into the Dem intrigue, fractured accusations are the norm. Chris Hayes had Jamelle Bouie on when the topic of the Lucas raid came up. Despite Lucas being a state politician, he stated that the GOP is trying to “weaponize prejudice” for the upcoming election. (Comically, the panel then turned to Ohio and began criticizing Vivek Ramaswamy, in the same manner they were accusing the Republicans.)

CBS News covered the very same territory while covering the Lucas story. While outlining the charges, reporter Nicole Sganga made sure to mention that Lucas opposed the president and tied this DOJ activity to the Ilhan Omar investigation.

In May, the FBI searched Lucas’s Virginia office and cannabis business, recovering marijuana and firearms. Lucas, an outspoken opponent of President Trump, said in a statement: “I grew up under Jim Crow. I spent my life fighting back, and I’m not stopping now.” The charges come just ten days after federal agents searched the D.C. home of another Trump critic, Minnesota Congresswoman Ilhan Omar.

The suggestion of election targeting is also prominent in this report. Sganga implies it violates a customary 60-day pre-election grace period for these types of DOJ actions.

Historically, the Justice Department has avoided pursuing sitting candidates within 60 days of an election. Not any longer, according to the attorney general.

She then plays a clip of Attorney General Todd Blanche saying the DOJ has no such guideline. What is not covered is that Lucas is not on a ballot in the coming weeks, so this would not be deemed an influence in that capacity.

As is always the case in the accusatory reports, there is little attention given to the legal process for these types of federal movements. In almost uniform fashion, these investigations by federal agents are presented as an expedient ploy for political gain.

While the specter of a Trump-inspired federal action being employed is heavily implied, what is glossed over is that a judge needs to first grant permission to do so, based on sufficient evidence presented. The president does not pick up a phone and dispatch agents to the homes and offices of selected Democrats.

And one other glaring detail is conveniently avoided: In both the Lucas and Omar cases, these are DOJ investigations that began during Joe Biden’s term.

It’s a telltale sign when that bit of pertinent information gets left out of most reports about these investigations.
