Introduction

The holiday resort industry is highly competitive, and an effective website is crucial for attracting and retaining customers. In this UX case study, we will explore the process of redesigning the website of a holiday resort to improve the user experience to increase bookings.

Background

This case study is based on my personal experience of booking a glamping resort online.

The glamping website resort had an outdated website that was not mobile-friendly and had a poor user experience. The website was difficult to navigate, and it was difficult for users to find the information they needed. Additionally, the website had a high bounce rate, indicating that users were leaving the website quickly without taking any action.

Problem Statement: Choosing a package can be a difficult decision as the information provided is not sufficient. The site also lacks the option to check for hygienic or vegetarian food options. Not easy to find and book the activities during the trip.

Business Goal: Increase website traffic by gaining users’ trust and providing a visually comfortable experience, resulting in an increase in bookings at the resort.

Methodology

I decided to plan user research in order to redesign the website in a way that is user-friendly and provides an easy booking process.

To redesign the website, I conducted a user research study to understand the needs and preferences of the resort’s target audience. The research included online surveys, interviews, and user testing. I analyzed the data collected to identify key pain points and areas for improvement.

User Research

I conducted user research to understand user behaviors, needs, and motivations through interviews, surveys, usability evaluations, and other forms of feedback methodologies. I also gave tasks to do on the existing website to see how people interact with the current scenario and what are the major pain points that need to be addressed.

Some major pain points from user research

Based on the findings from the user research, I identify areas for improvement on the website, such as redesigning certain pages, improving the website’s booking functionality, and adding more detailed information about the resort’s amenities, food availability, and services.

Ideation

The current phase of the website redesign project is the ideation stage. I started generating and evaluating various concepts for the website’s features and functionality. To facilitate this process, brainstorming sessions and workshops such as the “Crazy 8's” method have been employed. Additionally, I created wireframes to further visualize the website’s layout and functionality.

Brainstorming: Conducts a brainstorming session to generate a wide range of ideas for the website. Ideas might include features such as a virtual tour of the resort, an interactive map of the resort’s amenities, and an online booking system.

Crazy 8's: I collaborated with several designers and engineers in my network to organize an online Crazy 8’s session, where we generated a lot of ideas. Through this process, we were able to narrow down our favorite design elements and I began creating wireframes.

Wireframing: I created digital wireframes of the website using Figma, outlining the layout and functionality of the different pages.

To test the wireframes, I conducted user testing with a group of users who were representative of the resort’s target audience. The testing helped me to identify a couple of issues with the design and I made further improvements and created mockups.

Color and Typography

The purpose of creating a color and typography guide is to create uniformity and consistency between all elements. Based on the psychology of the fonts, I was looking for a font that shows a strong and progressive message to the readers, the font must be modern and clean. I decided to go with the font name “Poppins” which belonged to the sans-serif family.

Visual Design

Based on the research and after doing wireframes iterations, I created a new website design that was mobile-friendly, easy to navigate, and provided the information that users needed in a clear and concise manner. I also added a booking system to the website to make it easy for users to book a stay at the resort.

The redesign of the website resulted in significant improvement in the user experience. The website was now mobile-friendly and easy to navigate, and users were able to find the information they needed quickly and easily. Additionally, the booking system made it easy for users to book a stay at the resort.

The new website also increased bookings for the resort. The bounce rate was reduced, and the number of users who completed a booking increased by 20%. The new website also received positive feedback from users, with many praising its ease of use and the clear presentation of information.

Conclusion

This UX case study highlights the importance of user research and testing in the redesign of a website. By understanding the needs and preferences of the target audience, I was able to create a website that was easy to navigate, provided the information that users needed, and made it easy for users to book a stay at the resort. This case study demonstrates that by focusing on the user experience, businesses can improve their online presence and increase their revenue.
