Billionaire tech executive, diplomat, and avid angler Meg Whitman is seeking $18.5 million for her sprawling Northern California ranch, prized as one of the finest private fishing destinations in the state.

Nestled in the heart of the Fall River Valley, Spring Creek Ranch spans over 1,500 acres, including a private stretch of the Fall River, which is renowned as a fly-fishing paradise teeming with wild rainbow trout.

"For once, it is not an exaggeration to say this is a genuine 'once-in-a-lifetime' opportunity," writes one of the property's listing agents, Bill McDavid of Hall and Hall Inc. "A ranch where the most experienced fly fisherman can be challenged in the gin-clear private waters of Spring Creek, while a novice fisherman can fine-tune his skills on one of the many other waters on or adjoining the ranch."

Spring Creek Ranch is located 10 miles from Fall River Mills, which boasts a jet-accommodating airport, and just a few minutes away from restaurants and an 18-hole golf course. It promises would-be buyers an appealing combination of privacy and convenience.

Whitman, a groundbreaking former CEO of eBay and Hewlett-Packard (now HP), and her husband, neurosurgeon Griff Harsh, snapped up the property in 2019 for approximately $12.6 million, according to the Wall Street Journal.

At the time, the power couple, who have two adult children, were said to be living in Sacramento, CA, while also maintaining a two-bedroom home in West Hollywood.

In 2022, Whitman was nominated by President Joe Biden and confirmed by Congress to serve as the U.S. ambassador to Kenya, prompting her to list her two-bedroom home in West Hollywood for $5.5 million.

After returning from her diplomatic posting in 2024, Whitman moved to Albuquerque, NM, where her husband was appointed head of neurosurgery at the University of New Mexico, the Albuquerque Journal reported last year.

"They have been using the ranch less since they moved out of the state, so the timing is right," says McDavid, referring to the couple's decision to list Spring Creek Ranch.

Whitman, 69, is celebrated in business circles for taking eBay from $5.7 million to $8 billion in sales during her decade-long tenure as CEO. Following her stint at the helm of Hewlett-Packard, she sat on the boards of Procter & Gamble and General Motors.

Forbes estimates her current personal net worth at $3.88 billion, making her one of the world's wealthiest people.

Whitman has maintained a high-profile real estate portfolio over the years, including holdings in Los Angeles, a sprawling villa in the Silicon Valley enclave of Atherton, CA, and a ski home and dude ranch in Telluride, CO, according to past reporting.

Whitman's more recent purchase, Spring Creek Ranch—now the premier listing in Fall River Mills—is a sophisticated compound comprising multiple structures.

Speaking to the Journal this week, Whitman said when she and Harsh purchased the ranch nearly seven years ago, it was in a state of disrepair. They spent the first couple of years whipping it into shape and making extensive repairs.

"They did a tremendous amount of general cleanup work," McDavid tells Realtor.com®. "In addition, they leveled out additional farmland for higher production and upgraded the cattle working facilities. They also engaged in an extensive forest management plan with a focus on forest health and fire mitigation."

The ranch's centerpiece is a comfortable yet modest 3,000-square-foot, three-bedroom, 2.5-bathroom main residence designed to offer panoramic views of Mount Shasta.

Other notable features include a custom-designed Airstream fishing camp, several outbuildings, hay barns, workshops, and additional ranch infrastructure.

But arguably, the ranch's most valuable asset is its command over the Fall River headwaters, with the trophy estate controlling two of its primary spring-fed tributaries, Spring Creek and Lava Creek.

"The Fall River Valley has a rural, agricultural charm to it, and properties located on the Fall River have access to some amazing fishing," says McDavid. "Spring Creek Ranch, however, is a completely different animal, and there really is no match for it locally."

The river’s waters support hefty rainbow trout up to 6 pounds each, with exclusive access to the premier fishing spot reserved for the owners of Spring Creek Ranch.

The property also provides top-notch waterfowl and upland bird hunting, while the ranch's meadows, wetlands, and forested areas attract a diverse wildlife, including ducks, geese, deer, bears, mountain lions, as well as bald eagles and falcons.

Besides the many varied recreational opportunities Whitman's property affords, Spring Creek is a working ranch boasting reliable water rights from four different sources, including the Fall River, and 650 acres of irrigated farmland and pasture.

The estate offers diverse revenue streams through grazing and hay production. According to the listing details, a typical season includes two to three hay cuttings producing 3 tons per acre.

McDavid expects Spring Creek's next buyer to be someone who deeply appreciates the outdoors and is seeking a getaway from a busy life.

"Making a sound investment is always in the equation, and land has proven over many decades to be a solid bet for long-term appreciation and an inflation hedge," says the agent. "This is especially true for grade-A properties, and Spring Creek Ranch is sitting on the top shelf."
