Boston Consulting Group Offices – San Diego

Boston Consulting Group (BCG), collaborates with business leaders to address their most critical challenges. Their San Diego office, home to the local “BCGer”, as they call their staff, showcases this dedication by creating an inviting and energizing workspace. The design emphasizes sustainability, inclusivity, productivity, and wellness.

A crucial piece of the design concept was inspired by the young, San Diego “BCGer” and their journey to growth, celebrated by moments of discovery. The concept was connected to the uniqueness of San Diego, what it means to be a local, and what sets the San Diego team apart while still representing the values of BCG as whole. The local team has a culture that prides themselves on being driven, inquisitive, and inclusive. And as San Diego locals they live and breathe the San Diego lifestyle, “calm and energetic”. The serene color palette of blues and greens emulating the calm and energetic nature of the ocean combined with the deep earth tones and rocky textures of the cliffsides stimulate an immediate sense of connection to the natural surroundings in San Diego.

They also desired a welcoming environment that promoted inclusivity as well as mental and physical well-being. Exhibiting both a “calm and energetic” culture became the most important challenge for the design team: to create a design based around two contrasting terms that yet also perfectly describe San Diego. Playing itself out both in plan and finishes, this journey to discovery created by the design team emphasized connection, choice, emotion, and wellness.

The design team planned the space with the end-user’s “choice” in mind. Upon entering the reception, you can choose between two paths each with its own experiential discovery stimulating different emotions, spontaneity, and introspectiveness. In response to the societal impacts of the pandemic and “return to office”, this allows people to decide how they want to find their place, and what makes them comfortable. These strategies enhance the importance of inclusivity as well as stimulate productivity and creativity.
