A trio of teen boys from Chicago are facing robbery, gun and other serious charges after police in Morton Grove used K-9s and drones to help apprehend them following an alleged armed robbery.

According to a Morton Grove Police Department news release, officers in the north suburb saw people running from the Shell gas station in the 5600 block of Dempster Street just before 3 a.m. Tuesday.

After going inside the business, first responders discovered the store clerk had allegedly been beaten up in connection with “an apparent robbery.”

As part of their investigation into what happened, officers located a vehicle believed to be part of the alleged robbery.

Officers attempted a traffic stop at Dempster Street and Milwaukee Avenue, but the driver fled north on Milwaukee Avenue then ended up crashing the vehicle in the 9400 block of Milwaukee, according to the release.

Authorities said three people got out of the vehicle and ran from the scene on foot. Officers used K-9 units and a drone to search the area. All three were caught and arrested “without further incident,” the release explains.

Police said in the release that a Glock 17 handgun with an extended magazine and stolen property were found in the crashed vehicle when it was searched.

The alleged offenders charged in the case are three teenagers with home addresses on the South Side of Chicago. The boys, two of whom are identified as 15 years old and one is 14, are each charged with aggravated robbery, aggravated unlawful possession of a weapon, aggravated fleeing and eluding [police] and mob action, according to the release.

The boys were taken to the Cook County Juvenile Temporary Detention Center, police stated.

The investigation into the incident, including the alleged gas station robbery, is under investigation. Police ask that anyone with information call the Morton Grove Police Department at 847-470-5200.
