MIRI (Nov 6): Chinese investors are eyeing more than RM61 billion in investments in Malaysia, with proposed projects spanning six high-value and high-technology sectors, said Deputy Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture Chiew Choon Man.

He said the investment interest, estimated at more than US$15 billion, was conveyed during a meeting between Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Amar Fadillah Yusof and a 58-member Chinese business delegation led by Pansy Ho, vice-president of the All-China Federation of Industry and Commerce (ACFIC) and chairperson of Shun Tak Holdings, on Nov 2.

Chiew said he subsequently hosted a networking luncheon with Ho and the delegation on behalf of the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture (Motac), where discussions focused on strengthening partnerships between Malaysia’s tourism industry and Chinese business leaders.

The proposed investments cover six sectors: electrical and electronics (E&E) and semiconductors; specialised industrial materials and precision engineering; digital economy and technology infrastructure; food processing and halal products; health and pharmaceutical technology; and tourism.

“Throughout the conversations, we were made to know that the proposed investments will focus on high-value and high-technology sectors rather than labour-intensive industries that rely on unskilled labour.

“This is certainly a positive direction for Malaysia,” he said in a statement.

Chiew said the engagement also explored opportunities to attract more Chinese visitors to Malaysia and strengthen the country’s position as a preferred destination for international meetings, conventions and exhibitions.

He described China as a key tourism market for Malaysia, adding that closer cooperation could turn shared ideas into meaningful collaborations that benefit local industries and communities.

He also said discussions were ongoing on how Malaysia could become a potential partner for one of China’s major forums.

“Strategically located in Asean and rich in cultural and linguistic diversity, Malaysia is well-positioned for further tourism development and growth,” he said.

Chiew expressed optimism that the ACFIC delegation’s visit would pave the way for lasting partnerships, bringing more visitors, businesses and economic opportunities to Malaysia.

Also present were Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation Datuk Chang Lih Kang, Tourism Malaysia director-general Mohd Amirul Rizal Abdul Rahim, Malaysia Convention and Exhibition Bureau chief executive officer Tan Mei Ping, and senior Motac representatives.
