CNN’s Abby Phillip shut down a GOP strategist who claimed President Donald Trump’s children were being subjected to a “double standard” in a debate over the family’s money making efforts during Trump’s second term.

The conversation on Friday’s NewsNight with Abby Phillip initially centered on the economic pinch being felt by many Americans, while Trump has raked in big bucks off cryptocurrency and other ventures.

Donald Trump Jr. and Eric Trump have come under scrutiny after being financially linked to a project in Kazakhstan while they’re dad’s administration sought a strategic $1.6 billion mining agreement with the Central Asian.

Republican strategist Tim Parrish tried to defend the Trump children’s business ventures after Phillip noted the president “may not care that people don’t like they see him getting richer while in office:

TIM PARRISH:Yeah. When did the president say he didn’t care about —

ABBY PHILLIP: Well, he said in a New York Times — that’s not what I said. I said, he doesn’t care that there’s a perception that he’s enriching himself while in office. He said so explicitly. There was a New York Times interview in which they asked him a allowing his family to pursue these deals. He said, well, I realized that people really care, so I’ve let them do it.

PARRISH: Right I don’t think I think you’re probably mischaracterizing that the president saying he didn’t care about the perception of the American people, in that regard —

PHILLIP: So why’s he doing it?

PARRISH: I would say this and we’ve addressed this time and time again with the president and his children and families. His children are adults that are business people that can go and do their own ventures.

[CROSSTALK]

PARRISH: So why I don’t understand why every time one of the president’s children goes and does something in a business venture we act like it’s the end of the world. It’s not.

PHILLIP: The problem, Tim, is that they’re interacting with the government. They’re getting they’re engaging in before the government, getting government contracts for their investments. It’s not just, oh, they’re out doing business deals on random things. They’re doing business deals that have a direct relationship with the United States government, which is run by their father. That’s an obvious problem.

PARRISH: The double standard in this story that it’s atrocious how this double standard is being applied. First of all, just because, again I’m going to stay on the point that the president’s children can go run successful businesses. And no one they shouldn’t be held to account because they’re running a business because their father is the president of United States. But we saw in the last administration, families of family members of the Biden group, they were actually —

PHILLIP: I actually think that double standard is your problem, because if you had a problem with Hunter Biden,

PARRISH: It wasn’t just Hunter Biden, it was Hunter, it was the brother, it was the whole line —

PHILLIP: If you have a problem with that, you should haveyou should have ten times the problems with what’s going on with the Trump administration.
