A century-old beverage giant has become one of the more surprising stock-market winners of 2026, running ahead of faster-growing rivals. Coca-Cola (NYSE:KO) stock is down 0.6% to $92.83 in afternoon trading, a modest dip against a 35% gain year to date (YTD).

A surge this large from a mature consumer staple puts shareholders in a tough spot. The hold case rests on Coca-Cola’s defensive appeal, but a gain this large leaves less room for disappointment, the heart of the profit-taking argument.

Coca-Cola Outruns Its Beverage Rivals

Coca-Cola stock has pulled well ahead of its two closest beverage peers. Notably, PepsiCo (NASDAQ:PEP) stock is down 3% to $134.46 YTD. Monster Beverage (NASDAQ:MNST) stock is up 23% to $46.98 YTD, still behind Coca-Cola.

Each company runs a distinct business model. For its part, Coca-Cola sells concentrate and syrups to bottlers and owns brands including Sprite, Fanta, Powerade and BODYARMOR, while PepsiCo pairs beverages with a large snack business. Energy drinks are the focus at Monster.

Defensive Demand Explains Only Part of the Rally

A search for steadier names has supported consumer staples this year. The Consumer Staples Select Sector SPDR ETF (NYSEARCA:XLP) is up 15% to $87.59 YTD, short of the gain in Coca-Cola stock. Coca-Cola shares made up 6.8% of the fund’s net assets as of June 30, one of its largest positions.

Tech-heavy names have still done better than consumer staples; it’s worth noting that the Invesco QQQ Trust (NASDAQ:QQQ) is up 17% to $719.50 YTD. The XLP and QQQ ETFs have trailed Coca-Cola stock this year, pointing to company-specific strength beyond a defensive rotation.

Earnings Momentum Supports the Hold Case

Coca-Cola has backed its rally with steady execution. In Q2 2026, the beverage maker posted adjusted EPS of $0.97 against estimates of $0.93, while revenue of $13.38 billion also exceeded expectations. This report marked Coca-Cola’s fifth straight earnings beat.

Much of the heavy lifting came from Coca-Cola’s volume growth. The company’s global unit case volume rose 5%, led by India, China, the U.S. and Brazil, while Coca-Cola Zero Sugar grew 16%. Coca-Cola’s operating margin also expanded to 34.9% from 34.1%.

Management responded by raising Coca-Cola’s full-year 2026 outlook. It lifted its comparable EPS growth guidance to 9% to 10% from 8% to 9% and raised its free cash flow target to $12.4 billion. Explaining the pricing strategy, Henrique Braun, Coca-Cola’s chief executive at the time of the July 28 call, stated, “It’s really about value, not only pricing.”

Dividend income adds another layer to the hold case for Coca-Cola. Shareholders collect an annualized dividend of $2.12 per share, good for a 2.2% yield. Its quarterly payout rose to $0.53 in 2026 from $0.51 in 2025, extending a long record of annual increases that puts Coca-Cola among a small club of Dividend Kings we ranked by valuation in a free report.

Third-Quarter Report Puts the Rally to the Test

Coca-Cola stock trades at a trailing P/E ratio of 31x, a rich multiple for a company targeting 4% to 6% long-term organic growth. Management also flagged risks on the second-quarter call, including pressure on lower-income consumers, conservative spending in China and an unresolved tax dispute with the Internal Revenue Service. A calendar shift leaves the fourth quarter of 2026 with six fewer days than the same period of 2025.

Coca-Cola must now show whether its third-quarter 2026 report, expected October 27, supports the run. That report could show whether its raised full-year guidance holds up against an mixed consumer environment.

Strong results could extend the gains in Coca-Cola stock, while a miss could prompt profit-taking. It makes sense to keep any KO stock position sizes modest until the quarterly report is released.
