Hiring is an investment that companies do not always get a return on.

The fact that not every employee is going to be worth the hire is simply one of the risks of running a business. Sometimes the best interview still hides the fact that they are not suited for the job, or they decide themselves that it is time for them to move on to something new. It is not always easy to predict who is going to be a good fit and who isn't.

Still, even if a new hire winds up not working out, it is highly unlikely that their former employer is likely to be within their rights to take back the money that they spent on them. To put it mildly, it is bad practice to treat somebody in that way. On an ethical and usually legal level, there is no reclaiming what has already been given.

As a result, no matter how they happen to leave their job, most people expect to be paid for as long as they have worked for the company. It can come as a nasty shock when this company seems to have other ideas about how things are going to end.
