The Dallas Mavericks’ Cooper Flagg has become one of the most exciting names in basketball since the start of the new NBA season.

The 2025 Rookie of the Year has been viewed as a huge talent for well over a year now, but he has taken his game to an even higher level this campaign.

Flagg owes a lot to the Mavs for his development since he joined them, so much so that he’s ready to commit his entire career to the franchise.

Now, after his brilliant start to the new season, he stands a great chance of getting his wish.

Cooper Flagg’s dream of following Dirk Nowitzki could come true

A 19-year-old basketball player who is considered an elite talent would usually have ambitions to play for the best team in the NBA at all times.

However, for Flagg, the Dallas Mavericks is home already, and if it were up to him, he’d stay there for the rest of his professional career.

The teenager pointed to Dirk Nowitzki and how he is regarded as a legend in Dallas for spending the entirety of his 21-year career there.

Flagg would love to follow in the same footsteps, but he was mature enough to understand that it’s not in his hands and the business of basketball could easily take him to another franchise.

When asked if he would want to stay forever in Dallas, he said on the Almost Athletes with Dude Perfect show in June: “100 per cent!

“I think I would like nothing more than that to be able to… you look at someone like Dirk, obviously, his legacy, there’s nothing that touches that, to be that loved by a city, to have that much love and support from one place. I don’t think you could dream for anything else but that.

“That’s the ultimate goal, but like we were just talking about, it’s a business at the end of the day, and it’s not going to be my decision, I don’t think.”

It’s not going to be Flagg’s decision alone, but after a great rookie year and an electric start to his second season, the Mavericks would be silly to even consider letting him go.

Kyrie Irving is being linked with other teams, but for the Dallas front office, the aim is to build a long-term competitive future around Flagg under head coach Dusty May.

For that reason, unless something extremely drastic happens, we think Flagg’s wish to stay with the Dallas Mavericks for his entire career has a high chance of being granted.
