Crochet Dresses Are Taking Over Fashion Row By Row

While many assumed that jelly sandals were the nostalgic trend of the season, a new contender has entered the ring: crochet dresses. Yes, summer has officially kicked in full force, and the street style reflects that. However, it's not just your usual flowy white linens or jorts paired with sunglasses; it's garments that resemble your grandmother's wide range of crocheted pillows, blankets, and scarves.

While crocheting, knitting, and all things textile arts seem to be the hobby du jour as of late, the shift to dresses for the summer was one that was somewhat out of the blue. But as the true fashion fan knows, trends are (almost) always cyclical, and this current fascination with the garment is one that traces its roots back centuries.

Established in Europe in the early 19th century, the crochet hook usually interlocks loops of yarn to create a textile. From its easy portability to the unlimited creative designs one could make, the practice eventually gained popularity and has become a home-based tradition ever since.

Back in the '60s and '70s, the crochet dress was a favorite among early adopters of the boho style movement. Across the era, it became a go-to for those with a dreamy, romantic sense of style. In one of her most iconic looks, Jane Birkin wore a crochet dress.

Now, the rise of crochet has reappeared on the runway through a variety of avenues. In 2025, labels like Isabel Marant, Acne Studios, and Roberto Cavalli used the technique to make boho crochet dresses, the trend of the summer. Whether it was creams and neutral colorways or the perfect pastel, these garments would foster the ever-evolving obsession with the piece.

Even this year, Gabriela Hearst's Spring/Summer 2026 collection showcased a beach-ready sand-colored crochet dress. The simple accessories, bell-bottom long sleeves, and matching flats made the look like a breeze of fresh air. Similarly, Ulla Johnson's Spring/Summer 2026 collection used the crochet look in a yellow and white ensemble that featured raffia-like fringe. The look was paired with gold rings, a raffia clutch, and a pair of sand-colored heels.

For those wanting to try out the crochet dress, no need to overthink it. Though fabrics like linen and silk are typically summertime favorites, crocheted pieces actually offer a soft yet breathable touch. To keep things cute and minimalistic, try a lighter-colored mini dress with statement shoes and accessories. Allow the garment's intricate design to do the work for you and strut like nobody's business.

If you want to stand out at a beach party all summer long, a multicolored, patterned midi dress paired with simple gold jewelry and white or black pumps will easily make you the pearl of the ocean. The colors, styles, and silhouettes that the crochet dress inhabits are complex, but will ensure that glamour is kept at the helm of one's outfit.
