Eam Jaishankar Invokes Gandhi's Satyagraha To Mandela's Freedom Movement At Africa Day Event

At Africa Day celebrations in New Delhi, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar highlighted the enduring relationship between India and Africa, built on centuries of historical, cultural and ideological connections. He noted that both regions have shared ties through trade, cultural exchanges and common experiences over millennia. Jaishankar recalled their shared struggle against colonialism and their united efforts for freedom, equality and human dignity. He emphasised the role of Mahatma Gandhi, who developed the principles of Satyagraha and non-violence during his stay in South Africa. These ideas later inspired prominent African leaders such as Kwame Nkrumah, Julius Nyerere and Nelson Mandela in their liberation movements. Describing Africa Day as an emotional occasion, Jaishankar reaffirmed India’s commitment to deepening partnerships with African nations. He also welcomed 50 African diplomats participating in a training programme in India, reflecting growing cooperation and mutual understanding between the two regions.
