Fox News Host Says ‘pigeons Don’t Lay Eggs’ Before Getting Corrected By Guest

Fox News host Griff Jenkins made a humorous error Friday, saying that “pigeons don’t lay eggs” before he was corrected live on air by a befuddled chicken coop builder.

Jenkins was the guest host for The Will Cain Show and covering a story about Vice President JD Vance having a chicken coop installed at the Naval Observatory, the official residence for the vice president and his family.

Backyard chicken coops have been gaining in popularity, Jenkins noted, and the Vance family coop was designed by Carolina Coops, a family-run business that also makes other domestic bird habitats, including for pigeons.

He then cued up a video clip of Carolina Coops founder Matt Duboise at Mike Tyson’s home, calling it a “dream come true” to have the opportunity to install a pigeon coop for the boxer.

“Hey Matt. Does Mike Tyson know that — pigeons don’t lay eggs, right?” asked Jenkins.

Duboise blinked and stared in silence for a moment, before replying, “Well, actually, they — they do, but just not the chicken eggs that we want.”

“Ah!” said Jenkins, nodding.

Duboise diplomatically moved on immediately, saying it had been “a great, great time building that pigeon coop for Mike — I’m glad you guys showed that.”

“I love it!” declared Jenkins, pivoting to talk about the Vances’ coop, Duboise’s company history, and why so many Americans were raising their own chickens now.

At the end of the segment, Jenkins quipped that he “would actually consider it, possibly,” getting a chicken coop, “although I have a Jack Russell terrier so I don’t think it’s going to go well — he’ll just try and get in there every time.”

Like most birds, pigeons do in fact lay eggs — and yes, they are edible.

A report at Tasting Table describes pigeon eggs as having “a silkier texture and a richer aroma” than chicken eggs. They’re more costly, the article notes, as pigeons lay far fewer eggs (one or two at a time compared to the dozen or so per clutch for chickens) and they’re “incredibly delicate and challenging to harvest.”
