From Search Destruction To Efficiency, I Have Faith In Alphabet’s Abilities

Every earnings report keeps building the case for Alphabet (NASDAQ:GOOGL). Not long ago, the market decided that chatbots would gut Google Search. I bought through that fear, and the business proved the fear wrong. Alphabet now faces a second test: getting efficient returns from a record AI spending cycle. I trust this team to pass that one too.

Search Survived the AI Scare and Got Stronger

Alphabet owns the places where billions of people go looking for answers, and it has shown it can build AI into those places and get paid for it. Search & other revenue reached $63.27 billion in Q2 2026, up 17%, after 19% growth in Q1. A year earlier, that line grew 12%. Sundar Pichai said: “Our popular AI features are driving Search query growth.”

The AI products themselves now operate at real scale. Gemini’s app has 950 million monthly active users, Gemini models process 22 billion API tokens per minute, and nearly 90% of the Fortune 100 use Gemini Enterprise.

Cloud Momentum and Margin Discipline Back Up My Thesis

Over the last four quarters, Google Cloud growth went from 34% to 48% to 63% to 82%, reaching $24.77 billion in Q2. In Q1, backlog came in at over $460 billion. That is contracted demand for years ahead.

Efficiency is the part that convinces me most. Q2 operating income rose 30.4% on revenue growth of 24.2%, and operating margin expanded 2 percentage points to 34%, all while the company spent $44.92 billion on capex in one quarter. Return on invested capital stands at 29.6%. I still get all this for about 15 times earnings, an earnings yield of 6.48%. The dividend just went up 5% to $0.22 per share. At a 0.49% yield, I count the income as a bonus that should grow over time.

Why Alphabet Stands Out Against Microsoft, Meta, and Amazon

Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) is a great business, and Azure grew 43% last quarter. Still, it trades near 30 times earnings, while Google Cloud is growing faster at half the multiple. Meta Platforms (NASDAQ:META) is the obvious pick for digital ads, but its Q2 operating margin fell to 31% from 43% and free cash flow dropped to $784 million. Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN) has AWS growing 37%, but it trades at about 35 times earnings.

Capex Bill Is the Risk I Watch Most Closely

Alphabet guided to $175 billion to $185 billion in 2026 capex. Q2 free cash flow came in at negative $5.86 billion. The company saw long-term debt rise from $46.5 billion to $98.2 billion, management suspended buybacks, and the company raised roughly $70 billion in equity and debt. Reported net income also got a lift from a $99.03 billion unrealized gain, so I ignore that headline number. If the spending fails to earn a return, shareholders will pay for it.

My thesis holds because the cash engine behind the spending is still running. Q2 operating cash flow reached $39.07 billion, interest coverage sits at 175.5x, and the leverage ratio is only 0.143. In 2025, before this build-out topped out, Alphabet generated $73.27 billion in free cash flow.

What Keeps My Alphabet Thesis Intact

Already, Alphabet has beaten one serious scare. Over the past decade, the stock returned 772.41%. Now I expect the backlog to turn into revenue while margins hold. Pichai called the results proof that its “full stack approach to AI is delivering real, measurable value.” I have watched this company turn a supposed serious threat into its fastest growth in years, and I will keep tracking whether it turns the capex bill into profit.
