Game Day Economy: Florida State Football's Boost To Local Business
The 2026 Florida State football season is bringing visitors from across the country to Tallahassee, boosting local businesses as crowds flood the city. While kickoff times vary throughout the season, gameday activity at Doak S. Campbell Stadium extends well beyond the gates, creating consistent revenue for area hotels, restaurants, and retail stores, especially those in College Town.
For businesses like Madison Social and Picked, the success of a football weekend is measured not only by what happens within Doak S. Campbell Stadium, but also by how far those fans go once they leave it.
“The only reason our business works is because game days exist,” Picked owner Douglas Ramos said to the FSView. “It brings such a huge influence of people to Tallahassee that we wouldn't usually have access to so it’s huge for us”
Madison Social sees increased business from home games
Madison Social, a restaurant operated by For The Table Hospitality, benefits significantly from home games, particularly from the increase of out-of-state fans. Matt Thompson, managing partner of For The Table Hospitality, said home games are extremely important to the business. However, Thompson told the FSView that the economic scale depends more on just the schedule.
“Alabama last year was the best weekend we’ve ever had,” Thompson said to the FSView. “Opponent matters but so does how the schedule lays out because Tallahassee is not easy to get to.”
'Nole tide: Florida State takes down Alabama
The difference between a typical matchup and a high-profile game demonstrates how the football schedule shapes Tallahassee’s local economy. Out-of-town attendees can bring in as much as $47.8 million in direct spending during a typical Seminoles home season.
"Every year ... we're always preparing for game days. We're almost always booked. We just opened a new tower to accommodate more guests and we're usually almost completely sold out and we have a total of 237 rooms," Hotel Indigo Guest Service Ambassador Harmony Judson said to the FSView.
Madison Social, Picked partner to reach more game day customers
For businesses like Madison Social, the impact is not limited to the number of people spending inside the restaurant. Football weekends create opportunities for other local vendors to work together, drawing in shared revenue across multiple industries.
“It takes a lot of collaboration to pull off a football game weekend, whether it’s small or big,” Thompson said.
Madison Social collaborated with Picked, a local vintage clothing store, to sell FSU-branded koozies before the ’Noles Aug. 29 season opener against New Mexico State University.
“It helps us reach more people,” Ramos said. “They have an even broader range of customers that has a lot of crossover.”
High-profile matchups can shape business outlook
Some of season’s largest revenue-generating home games will likely be matchups against Clemson University, North Carolina State University, Southern Methodist University, the University of Florida, and the University of Virginia. For Picked, preparing for those out-of-town visitors starts long before kickoff.
“The amount of people that come to town is far greater than the people who are in town regularly,” Ramos said. “Those people bring money with them so we spend eight to nine months out of the year planning our drops and hope people enjoy it when football season comes.”
As the Garnet and Gold prepares to take the field, all local businesses across Tallahassee begin to accommodate for larger groups of people and busier areas throughout the city. Whether it's partnering with a retail store or a hotel, small businesses are dependent on not only the game day revenue but also the network of local businesses that benefit from the influx of visitors.
