The data suggest you probably aren’t a fan of data centers, but would you pee on one? A new viral ad from drinkmakers Liquid Death and Garage Beer cheekily encouraged people to pee into a jar and send it to the AI data center of their choice to replace the nearly 5 million gallons of water a day it reportedly takes to cool a large data center.

Jason Kelce, who co-owns the beer company with his brother Travis, singing “Let’s pee on computers together and save humanity” as he leads a group through a field (you can watch it here) is a pretty standard commercial for both beverage brands with a history of outrageous marketing stunts. But the issue at the heart of the ad is a serious one:

  • Americans hate data centers: 71% of people in a recent Gallup poll said they opposed new AI data centers in their area—with about half of all respondents saying they were “strongly” against it.
  • It’s a rare bipartisan issue that Americans largely agree on—something the brands are hoping to cash in on.

But there’s marketing on the other side, too. Companies like Meta and OpenAI are scrambling to combat anti-AI data center sentiment across the country by holding taco-bar-filled open houses, launching billion-dollar community grants, and promising to create jobs for locals.—MM
