Google Expands Financial Services Ad Verification To The Us And Canada
Google is introducing Financial Services Verification in the United States and Canada, requiring certain financial advertisers to prove they’re authorized to offer their services before running ads.
The new requirements are expected to roll out in early 2027 as Google strengthens its efforts to prevent financial scams and advertiser impersonation.
What’s changing. Google’s Financial Services Verification program is expanding to two of its largest advertising markets.
The program already operates across 42 countries, covering approximately 2 billion internet users.
Under the expanded policy:
- Additional verification: Certain financial advertisers must prove they’re authorized to provide the services they advertise.
- Regulatory checks: Google will validate credentials against relevant financial regulators or recognized registries.
- Country-specific requirements: Verification procedures will differ between the US and Canada.
- Phased rollout: Google will introduce the requirements gradually, with enforcement following advertiser notifications and onboarding guidance.
How it works. Financial Services Verification adds another layer of protection on top of Google’s existing advertiser identity verification.
Google says more than 97% of ads shown in the US and Canada already come from identity-verified advertisers.
The additional checks are designed to prevent unauthorized financial advertisers from running ads and reduce the risk of scammers impersonating legitimate financial institutions.
Google first introduced Financial Services Verification in the UK in 2021 and has since expanded the program to other markets, including the European Union.
Why we care. Financial services advertisers should prepare for additional compliance requirements that could affect their ability to run ads. Businesses may need to confirm that their regulatory registrations and authorization details are accurate and ready for Google’s verification process.
Industry partnerships. Google is working with financial organizations to verify legitimate advertisers.
In the US, Google is collaborating with the American Bankers Association to use its dedicated registry to confirm authorized banks before their ads can run.
In Canada, Google is working with the Canadian Bankers Association ahead of the rollout.
The company says these partnerships will help adapt verification requirements to each country’s regulatory environment.
What advertisers should expect. Google plans to provide more detailed guidance before the early 2027 rollout.
This will include accepted registries, required credentials and instructions for completing verification.
Advertisers will be notified if and when they need to complete the process, giving affected businesses time to prepare before enforcement begins.
Advertisers that fail to complete required verification could face restrictions on running affected financial ads once enforcement begins.
Financial Services Verification adds an upfront credential check to those automated protections.
The bottom line. Google will introduce additional financial advertiser verification in the US and Canada beginning in early 2027. Affected advertisers will need to prove they’re authorized to offer financial services, with country-specific requirements and onboarding instructions coming before enforcement.
