Google Wants To Fight Fintech Scams With Mandatory Verification In North America

Google has just announced that it’s expanding its Financial Services Verification program to North America, which brings specialized credential checks to advertisers in the United States and Canada. Scheduled for a full rollout by 2027, the expansion builds on a global initiative that currently protects around 2 billion internet users across 42 countries.

Under the updated policy, Google says that financial advertisers must prove that they are authorized by relevant regulators or recognized registries before running specific financial ads. This validation is designed to prevent brand impersonation and essentially stop scammers from getting the better of consumers.

To streamline the rollout, Google is partnering with industry groups including the American Bankers Association in the United States and the Canadian Bankers Association in Canada. These partnerships will use established registries to verify authorized banks before their ads can go live.

The new verification requirement also coincides with Google’s automated enforcement systems. The company says that in 2025, artificial intelligence tools helped the platform block over 99% of policy-violating ads in real time before they reached users.

Google adds that it will release country-specific guidelines for advertisers ahead of the 2027 enforcement date, detailing required credentials, accepted registries, and step-by-step onboarding instructions. Businesses will receive direct notifications when verification opens to ensure compliance before enforcement begins.
