Heart Patient Rebuilding Life After Family Crisis Receives Ngo Support

KUCHING (Sept 15): A 48-year-old man facing several health issues and financial difficulties is receiving aid from Hope Place Kuching after being left to cope with on his own following the disappearance of his wife and daughter last year.

Tan Eng Han, who currently lives in Landeh, recently underwent angioplasty after being diagnosed with heart disease in 2020. He also has diabetes and high blood pressure.

Tan was recently discharged from the Sarawak Heart Centre in Kota Samarahan and was referred to Hope Place Kuching by the Welfare Department.

Hope Place is providing him with basic food supplies until he is financially able to support himself again.

During a recent visit, the non-governmental organisation (NGO) was told that Tan had previously worked as a salesman before starting a home-based business selling electrical appliances.

He said the business had initially been doing well, with his wife assisting with paperwork and other matters at home.

“However, his health problems eventually affected the business, causing sales to decline drastically,” said Hope Place.

The NGO said Tan’s medical expenses also depleted his savings.

Tan told Hope Place that his wife and seven-year-old daughter disappeared last year along with most of his possessions, including his savings, house furniture and vehicle.

“I woke up one day and found my house emptied. My wife and daughter were nowhere to be seen. My bank account had also been drained.

“Even now, I feel so hopeless and dejected. Everything I hold dear is destroyed,” he said.

According to Hope Place, Tan is slowly rebuilding his life despite his circumstances.

The organisation said he currently does freelance translation work, earning less than RM500 a month on average.

“Although not earning much, on average below RM500, it is a good start,” he said.

Tan expressed gratitude to those who had reached out to him during his difficult period, particularly church members.

It is understood that Tan had previously donated electrical items to the church.

Hope Place said his application for monthly welfare assistance had been approved, and he is expected to receive RM300 per month.

“With so much expenses like house instalments, utilities and medical bills, every sen is crucial,” it added.
