Holden Elizabeth Factory In South Australia To Help Deliver Your Mail

An AusPost executive, politicians, and developers posed with shovels and a pile of dirt to announce that the site once home to Holden’s final factory in South Australia is on its way to becoming a parcel sorting facility.

AusPost claims the new 83,000 square-metre facility, first announced in October last year, will cost $500 million and be operational by the end of 2028.

The planned facility appears to be positioned in a car park at the southern end of the former Holden factory, rather than encompassing the whole former facility or existing buildings.

Google Earth images suggest the area to be developed has primarily served as a car holding yard since at least 2003.

Described as the ‘Adelaide Parcel Super Hub’ AusPost say the facility will process up to 400,000 parcels per day.

Australia Post Executive Shane Plant didn’t specify how many jobs would be created by the new centre, but said the government-owned operation would be looking for roles that can “work alongside robotic systems.”

 “This facility will be the blueprint for our most technically advanced facilities, providing greater opportunities for team members to upskill technically, operationally and digitally,” Plant said.

“We’ll be looking for roles that support automation and controls, mechanical and electrical and those that can work alongside robotic systems as we continue to modernise our network.”

The former Holden site was purchased by Pelligra Group in 2017 and converted to a business park. The closure of the factory marked the end of domestic vehicle manufacturing in Australia.

Pelligra Group Chairman Ross Pelligra was pleased by AusPost embarking on the half-billion dollar development of the site.
