Howie Rose Bids Farewell To Fans On One Of Last Mets Broadcasts Of His Career

For nearly four decades, Howie Rose has been broadcasting New York Mets games on the radio. On Saturday, he called what could possibly be his final game.

The Mets beat the Philadelphia Phillies 10-3 on Saturday evening and will close out the four-game series on Sunday afternoon. But Rose officially put a bow on his legendary career last night, hedging against a poor weather forecast for Sunday that threatened to postpone the Mets’ final home game of the season.

“Whether they play tomorrow or not, I just preemptively want to say how much you all mean to me,” Rose told listeners during Saturday’s postgame show. “And when I’m saying ‘you all,’ it’s not a dialect, it’s covering not only my friends here in the booth and my colleagues, but right now I want to speak solely to you, the Mets fan. Because I’ve used the term forever, kindred spirits, and I think you understand that any one of you could be where I’m sitting here in this booth because we have very similar backgrounds. I grew up in the upper deck of Shea Stadium, many of you sit in the upper deck here or sat somewhere here or at Shea Stadium. But the point is that I feel like I know you, and more importantly I feel like that you know me. But what I feel more than anything is that we’ve been together for the entirety of my time in this booth. And if I ever doubted that or ever thought that maybe that was an exaggeration, believe me, it’s hit home over the last couple of weeks with all the intention that this retirement announcement has somehow gotten. …It’s been ridiculous. It’s been so overwhelming, I just feel like it’s a bottom of an avalanche with it.

“When I really reflect on it, I have to basically quote the best to ever do it, and that’s Vin Scully. And I guess if you’re going to plagiarize anybody, you might as well plagiarize the best. …He spoke to the fans and he said, ‘You know, I needed you more than you ever needed me.’ And I didn’t understand that when he said that, but reading the comments and everything that’s been written, whether that be newspapers, online, broadcast, anywhere else, to hear the love that you’ve sent to my family and me, I think I know what Vin meant.”

On Sunday morning, the Mets announced that the team’s planned ceremony to celebrate Rose will be postponed to the start of next season, though the game will be played as scheduled.

“Howie Rose is more than a broadcaster to this organization. He is a part of the fabric of the New York Mets. Out of respect for everything he has meant to our fans, we have decided to postpone the ceremony and instead honor him during Opening Weekend 2027,” President of Business Operations Lew Sherr said in an announcement on Sunday. “While we are disappointed that inclement weather will prevent us from having our planned ceremony, we want to make sure that we properly celebrate Howie for all that he has done for the Mets.”

Rose would appear to be in line to call Sunday’s contest, giving him one final opportunity to say farewell to fans. Rose, however, did not close the door to an occasional return post-retirement, saying last month he could drop in for a game or two after he retires.
