I Spent 2.5 Years Selling Notion Templates. Here's My Honest Story, With Real Numbers.
Lately, I keep seeing young creators making videos about getting rich selling digital products, with Notion templates at the top of almost every list.
They present it as a business you can build and live off. (I honestly don't know whether all this hype is promoted by Notion or not.)
So here's my experience after approximately 2.5 years.
100K+ views. 21K downloads. Just $1,263 in earnings.
And here's the number that surprised me most: only 121 paid purchases out of approximately 21,000 total downloads. That's around 0.58%.
People love free Notion templates. But getting them to actually pay for one is a completely different story.
I've tried TikTok, YouTube, Pinterest, and even blog posts. Despite all that effort, getting people to click your template links is incredibly difficult.
Notion is primarily a tool people use to organize their notes, projects, and ideas. There are so many free templates available that convincing someone to pay for another one isn't easy.
And honestly, I sometimes wonder whether some of the creators promoting the "make thousands selling Notion templates" business model are making more money from selling courses about making money than from selling templates themselves. ????
I'm not saying you shouldn't sell Notion templates.
If you're already a Notion user and make useful templates for yourself, absolutely list them on the Marketplace. It's a great way to get some exposure, grow your social media following, build an email newsletter, or make a little extra money to cover your Notion, YouTube, or ChatGPT subscriptions.
But treating it as a reliable full-time business? Maaaan... I'd think twice before investing months of your time or money into it.
The comments under those money-making videos are particularly frustrating. People genuinely believe it's an easy business. One person even asked whether they needed a PC to start selling templates. ????
My point is simple: selling Notion templates isn't the easy money-making opportunity that social media makes it look like.
Maybe I'm wrong. Maybe some people are making serious money doing this.
I'd love to be proven wrong. Let's share some real numbers instead of another "How I made $10K selling digital products" video.
