Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) – Iraqi Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi announced the Energy City project on Thursday as part of a government plan to enhance energy infrastructure and strengthen partnerships with major international firms.

Al-Zaidi announced the Energy City initiative during an official visit to the United States, which included discussions with US officials and executives from American energy businesses.

This visit is part of Baghdad’s efforts to attract new investments that support plans to increase oil production, develop the gas sector, and enhance electricity generation capacity.

The Iraqi government is depending on the new project to turn the al-Faw Peninsula into an integrated center for the oil, gas, and electricity industries, taking advantage of its strategic location on the Arabian Gulf and proximity to oil export routes and the Development Road project.

The development takes place as Iraq continues to implement plans to eliminate gas flaring, expand domestic gas output, and reduce dependency on imported fuel for power plants, all while increasing refining capacity.

Al-Zaidi’s announcement took place during his participation in the Iraqi-American Chamber of Commerce’s Joint Economic Dialogue Forum in Houston, Texas, to finalize over $60 billion in deals with US energy companies.

The prime minister explained that the project includes integrated complexes for crude oil refining, gas production, processing units, and power plants, as well as connections to strategic oil pipelines and the Development Road, strengthening Iraq’s position as a regional energy and logistics hub.

Al-Zaidi highlighted that Iraq is seeking strategic partners, rather than just contractors, who can assist with technology transfer and contribute to the creation of new job opportunities.

Chairman of the Bilateral Chamber of Commerce David Phillips confirmed the Texas business community’s and large American firms’ willingness to invest in Iraq, notably in oil, gas, and energy projects.
