Gemini users in the United States reported problems with the platform on Thursday, mainly when trying to get responses from its AI tools. Reports began to climb during the morning and point to issues that also appear to be affecting access to recent conversations. Here’s everything we know so far.

Is Gemini Down Today?

Reports of the outage rose quickly throughout the morning. According to Downdetector, more than 6,000 users had logged problems with Gemini around 9:30 a.m. PT, and the number later approached 10,000 reports.

AI generation accounts for most of the reports, making up 69% of the incidents logged, while website problems account for 13% and app-related issues make up 12%.

Users describe requests that end in error messages instead of a response. Some reports say the problem happens repeatedly when they send different prompts to Gemini.

On top of that, users are running into problems with recent conversations. Some say certain chats disappear from their history for no apparent reason, making it harder to find information they had looked up or used before.

Why Is Gemini Not Working?

Google hasn’t confirmed what’s causing the problems users in the United States are reporting. The status page for its services also doesn’t show a specific Gemini outage and says systems are operational.

The platform has had a conversation history issue before. In February 2026, Google acknowledged a problem that prevented users from viewing past conversations on both the web version and the Gemini mobile apps. In that incident, the company explained that a background process had caused conversation metadata to be lost. Google later worked on a fix. It’s unclear whether the same thing is happening now.

What Can You Do With Gemini?

Gemini can be used to generate text, answer questions, summarize information, translate content and help with a variety of writing tasks. It can also analyze information, develop ideas, create content and work with different types of files, depending on the features available in each version of the service.

How Do You Use Gemini?

It’s simple to use. You type a question or instruction, known as a prompt, and the system analyzes it to figure out what you’re asking. Based on that analysis, it generates a response word by word, calculating at each step which continuation is the most likely and coherent.

Unlike other assistants that focus only on text, Gemini is multimodal: it can process and combine different types of content. That means it can analyze an image, interpret a document, summarize a file or answer questions about code, all within the same conversation.

You can access it from a browser or the mobile app, and the platform also integrates with other Google services, such as Gmail, Docs and Drive, depending on the version and plan. The quality and capabilities available depend on which model is being used.

Is Gemini Free?

Gemini offers a free version with access to AI tools, no subscription required. The features available can vary depending on the account and the terms of the service.

Google also offers paid options with expanded access to certain AI tools and capabilities. That means some Gemini features may depend on the type of plan each person uses.

How Much Does a Gemini Subscription Cost?

In the United States, Gemini has several paid subscription plans, with prices that vary based on the features and AI capabilities included.

Here are the plans it offers:

  • Google AI Pro: $19.99 per month.
  • Google AI Ultra: $249.99 per month.
