An Italian chef working in Australia claimed he was wrongly fired from his job for refusing to put pineapple on pizza, telling the country’s Fair Work Commission the dish is an “insult to his culture.”

The commission dismissed Davide Tamburella’s claim on the grounds that he filed it too late, not that he was wrong. The La Costa restaurant, located in Queensland, has since closed. The state produces 100% of the country’s commercial pineapples and is home to a 52-foot-tall pineapple called The Big Pineapple (makes sense).

But, just like a Chicago pizza, this goes deeper:

  • Tamburella’s bosses cited his foul language and communication style as reasons for his firing in the ruling, which also included a claim that he broke his hand punching a metal railing.
  • This was allegedly the third time in four years that he refused to put pineapple on pizza.

Most surveys show that Americans are split on the tropical fruit topping, but one poll in 2023 found that 72% of Australians love it.

In the end, Tamburella got a new job at another Italian restaurant in Brisbane that does not have pineapple pizza on the menu.—DL
