A data breach at an Ivy League university has exposed information tied to more than 850,000 accounts belonging to alumni, donors and others.

Data breach notification service Have I Been Pwned has analyzed records stolen from Harvard University’s Alumni Affairs and Development systems and confirmed the leak includes 851,000 unique email addresses, reports BleepingComputer.

Says Have I Been Pwned,

“The data contained 851k unique email addresses relating to the university’s alumni and fundraising systems, along with extensive profile information for donors, alumni, parents and some faculty, staff and students.”

The leaked data also includes names, dates of birth, phone numbers, physical addresses, social media profiles and others.

Harvard says it discovered on November 18th, 2025, that the systems had been accessed through a phone-based phishing attack.

The university says the systems do not generally hold Social Security numbers, passwords, payment card information or financial account numbers, but they do include email addresses, phone numbers, home and business addresses, event attendance and donation details.

Harvard sent notices on November 22nd, 2025, to people whose information may have been accessed.

The ShinyHunters extortion group claimed responsibility for the attack and said it stole more than 1 million records.

The group leaked a 1.1GB archive of the stolen data on its dark web leak site in early February after Harvard refused to pay a ransom.

Harvard has not tied the attack to a specific group and says it is working with law enforcement and cybersecurity experts to investigate.
