Jay-Z surveyed the job candidates and decided that Jay-Z will be the Super Bowl 61 halftime performer in February, according to Puck News. The move proves that who you know is still the most important part of getting hired.

  • The NFL signed a deal with Jay-Z’s company, Roc Nation, in 2019 that allows the rapper to choose the halftime performer.
  • Miley Cyrus and Justin Bieber were reportedly considered before Jay-Z went with the artist he’s worked with most.
  • Hov could make the news official during his shows this weekend at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles, the site of the upcoming Super Bowl.

Why now? At 56 years old, Jay-Z may be thinking about legacy. His busy 2026 has included reuniting the Fugees (and maybe bringing them out at the Super Bowl?), sold-out shows in New York and Paris to celebrate the anniversaries of his albums Reasonable Doubt and The Blueprint, and dropping an eight-part retrospective documentary about his career.

The NFL doesn’t pay halftime performers, but the exposure can lead to a bump in streaming revenue. Bad Bunny’s 2026 performance generated a 175% increase in streams in the US on the Monday after the game. Jay-Z could eclipse that, especially if he can figure out a way to connect with Beyoncé.—DL
