Three Korean universities — Seoul National University, Yonsei University and Korea National University of Arts — had a combined 11 entries in the top 25 of the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2026, though no school in Korea managed to place in the top 10.
Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) released its QS World University Rankings by Subject 2026 on Wednesday, which evaluated 1,900 universities across a wide range of subject areas. The subject rankings cover five areas: arts and humanities; engineering and technology; life sciences and medicine; natural sciences; and social sciences and management. These five broad areas encompass 55 disciplines, each with its own individual ranking.

A total of 47 universities from Korea were featured in the subject rankings this year, totaling 576 entries across subject rankings.
Seoul National University achieved the highest discipline placement for a Korean university, placing 11th globally in social policy and administration. However, that represented a drop from last year's 8th place ranking.

The university also landed within the top 25 in eight more disciplines including chemical engineering, where it ranked 13th, down from last year's 11th. It also placed 14th in modern languages, up from last year's 19th place. For linguistics, it placed 18th, edging down from 17th place last year.
Yonsei University is another school with subjects areas in the top 25. It placed 14th in social policy and administration, though that is down significantly from last year's 6th ranking in the discipline.
While Seoul National University and Yonsei University both placed in the top 10 for social policy and administration last year — marking Korea’s second-ever top 10 rankings in individual disciplines — both dropped out of that range this year, leaving Korea without a university in the top 10 in any discipline this year.
Korea National University of Arts did make the top 25, placing 21st in performing arts, though that too represents a drop, six spots lower than last year's 19th ranking.
“Korea has an ambitious strategy to enhance its higher education landscape as it increasingly appeals internationally as a study destination,” said Ben Sowter, senior vice president of QS in a press release. “The QS World University Rankings by Subject 2026, however, show that competition globally continues to rise.”
“While Korean institutions ranked within the top 10 in social policy in 2025, this year heightened international competition has seen changes among the top-ranked entries. Korea, which was crowned home to the best student city in the world by QS in 2025, has seen institutions improve in broad faculty areas such as Arts & Humanities and Engineering & Technology, while eight institutions now feature in the top 100 for modern languages, up from six last year.”
QS uses five indicators to compile the subject rankings: academic reputation, employer reputation, citations per paper, international research network and what they call H-Index, which measures productivity and the impact of scholars' published works.
KAIST was not part of this year's list, as they have been excluded from QS's rankings from June 2025 through June 2026. This decision was due to a controversial incident, when a KAIST professor emailed professors abroad, saying that those participating in an academic reputation survey used in the QS rankings would receive a gift certificate.
